Need to make Hexagon

Recommended Posts

I have looked everywhere on how to reshape a primative into a hexagon and can't find anything on it.  I posted in the forums for help and I have also looked for online tutorials to no avail.  If there is anyone who can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.  The manual talks about free form shapes but not exactly how to use them I don't see any sliders or anything else that would let me segment the polygon.  I know I am missing something here.  thanks in advance for your help.

One way...

Ortho mode needs to be selected... The 5 key on your keypad.

This is using a cube. Use the cut-0ff tool plus the close spline tool from the E-panel. You can press the "e" key to bring up the panel  if  you do not know it's location in the UI.

Turn on symmetry and select the axis you desire for your first cut

Create you spline, deselect the B-spline in the tools icon, the small grey box. right click on points to make them hard. Now you can move the points for an accurate cut off.

Now deselect that axis and select the axis that will be used to copy the cut off side to the other side of the object.

Under the Geometry tab select "Symm Copy".  If the cut off side is not copied then select the smooth tool with Zero strength and just click once on the cut side.  Now repeat the Symm Copy function.

The above method creates clean cuts.

There is a Solid Hexagon in the primitives but it has a bevel top. You could just cut off the top if you do not desire the bevel.

Another way is create your own hexagon stencil or use one of the Ngon stencils. Use the cut off tool.  Invert the white Ngon stencil first. That function is located in the preview functions panel.

Clean up the edges has shown in the picture using the close spline tool.  Then as above select the axis to copy the cleaned cut side to the other side.

Also the picture shows how you can use the closed spline tool in the first example for the cuts. These cuts will produce clean edges and not the jaggy ones using the stencil method.
