Grid-like patterns after baking to PTEX. Why?

Hello there.

I was trying to bake displacement map to PTEX when I found this weird behaviour.

After PTEX displacement was applied to the retopo mesh (in paint room), I got this grid-like patterns as in my attachment.

The pattern didn't seem to be following the topology of the retopo mesh. (shown in the attachment with wireframe display)

And there is definitely no such pattern in my original mesh. (shown in the attachment with PicMat_Clay shader)

Also, when I clicked Retopo->PTEX (no baking) and got the retopo mesh in paint room, I can find this grid-like pattern as well.

But this time it seemed to be following the topology of the retopo mesh, so I can't tell whether this is a rendering problem or something else.

Hoping someone to tell me what is going on.

Best regards,

Version beta 4.5.28

Possible bug... The square artifacts are baked into the displacement map...

In testing... I found the same results either with Ptex or Microvertex...

Even if you subdivide to the highest amount allowed in the baking panel, if you zoom in you still see the baked subdivided polygon squares in the displacement map.

Workaround for now...

On the displacement layer: Use the fill tool, select "fill with smooth" at 50% smooth in the top panel. Do this twice or so depending upon the amount of subdivision and it removes the square artifacts. Of course you can try 100% smooth but it seem to work better running 50% smooth a few times.

Remember it is a workaround, it is the best I can come up with for now...

Attached images show my baking panel, fill panel and the results of using fill smooth to get rid of the square artifacts.

EDIT: last image shows the voxel model on the left and the displacment model on the right... You lose only a small amount of sharpness running smooth.

The model was subdivided to appox 450,000 when baking to the paint room in this example.
