{"id":13597,"date":"2026-02-07T09:37:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-07T09:37:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/?post_type=manual_documentation&#038;p=13597"},"modified":"2026-02-07T10:13:25","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T10:13:25","slug":"surface-materials","status":"publish","type":"manual_documentation","link":"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/paint\/surface-materials\/","title":{"rendered":"Surface Materials"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Surface Materials in 3DCoat are the equivalent of polygonal material assignments from other programs, such as Modo or Maya.<br \/>If upon import 3DCoat detects any of these Surface Materials, they will be respected and kept, and can also be used to perform various functions in the Paint Room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2 panels are very useful to isolate paint objects:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Windows > Panels > Surface Materials<br \/>Display the objects surface materials list. You can rename, hide, lock surface materials, and change texture sizes for export.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"266\" height=\"80\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-1.png?wsr\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13601\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Windows > Panels > Painting Objects<br \/>Show the Paint Objects list into a Layer system. You can rename, hide lock and delete objects listed here.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"146\" height=\"83\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13599\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In 3DCoat unlike SPainter the textures are assigned globally by painting Objects or Surface materials, and not by texture sets (uvsets).<br \/>So you don&#8217;t need to assign the same smart material to every layer or uDim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Everything can be done inside the Modeling or Retopo Room<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Go to &#8220;Edit > Preferences > Beta > Treat retopo groups as materials&#8221;<br \/>2. Make poly selections and separate onto different Poly Group layers<br \/>3. &#8220;Bake Menu > Update Paint Mesh with Retopo Mesh&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should now see them pop up in the Surface Materials panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f1f1f1\">After you create the Surface Materials, usually go back and undo Step 1 so that can do the usual workflow from there.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"parent":2074,"menu_order":3,"template":"","manualdocumentationcategory":[9],"manual_doc_tag":[],"class_list":["post-13597","manual_documentation","type-manual_documentation","status-publish","hentry","manualdocumentationcategory-manual"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.3 -
