{"id":2070,"date":"2022-09-09T14:27:53","date_gmt":"2022-09-09T14:27:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/?post_type=manual_documentation&#038;p=2070"},"modified":"2025-03-16T10:25:36","modified_gmt":"2025-03-16T10:25:36","slug":"brush-components","status":"publish","type":"manual_documentation","link":"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/","title":{"rendered":"Brush Components"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Many of 3DCoat&#8217;s functions are implemented with a familiar \u201cBrush\u201d interface that both corresponds to real-world equivalents and goes beyond and extends the abilities that real-world tools of similar nature are capable of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add and remove volume, extrude and imprint detail, and add accurate hard surface features with the control of splines and curves, circles, ellipses, and polygons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add realistic media textures and displacements, paint curve-based repetitive elements, precisely position and stamp relief elements and actual models, and add appendages with freehand flexibility, as well as with the precision of adjustable curves\u2026 all these things are possible with 3DCoat Brushes and their Options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brush strokes can also be modified using functions from the Smart Materials, Stencils, Strips, Models, and Curves Panels when the context is appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"brush_controls\">Brush Controls<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components#brush_controls\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, in all workspaces, Brush behavior and control are standardized. 3DCoat has provided a very fast, responsive, and intuitive set of gestures that the mouse or stylus can utilize to apply many Brush attributes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong>&nbsp;LMB dragging with the cursor over an object performs the primary function of any tool and its parameters.<br \/><strong>2.<\/strong>&nbsp;RMB dragging (left and right) with the cursor over an object resizes the Brush. This value can be entered numerically, as well, in the \u201cBrush Parameters Panel\u201d located at the top of the interface.<br \/><strong>3.<\/strong>&nbsp;RMB dragging (up and down) with the cursor over an object increases the operational depth of the Brush. This value can be entered numerically in the \u201cBrush Parameters Panel\u201d at the top of the interface.<br \/><strong>4<\/strong>&nbsp;SHIFT+LMB and stroking will perform a smooth operation with almost any tool in both the Paint &amp; Sculpt Rooms.<br \/>5&nbsp;SHIFT+CTRL+LMB and stroking in the Sculpt Room will apply whatever action you\u2019ve set in the Top Bar (The default is Powerful Smoothing, and there are a number of other functions in this drop-down list, which are covered in another section of this documentation).<br \/><strong>6.<\/strong>&nbsp;Both Brush \u201cFalloff\u201d and \u201cSmoothing\u201d, as well as a spline-based, directional Steady Stroke can be applied by check box and numerical entry in the \u201cBrush Parameters Panel\u201d, at the top of the interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"brushes\">Brushes<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components#brushes\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/brushes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brushes<\/a><br \/>3DCoat\u2019s Brushes can be given a \u201cprofile\u201d by means of the Brush Alpha Panel. These are default or custom-made images which affect both the depth of the Brush application and the shape of the \u201cbristles\u201d, as well. Brush Alphas can also be constructed from 3D .obj files, extracting the view-based height map from the model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stroke_mode_panel\">Stroke Mode Panel<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components#stroke_mode_panel\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/strokes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stroke Mode Panel<\/a><br \/>In the Stroke Mode Panel, you will find various stylus pressure modes, lasso modes, and curve modes. Each of these modes allows you to control your strokes either with pressure, using a curve as a path, lassos, and more. This panel contains some of the most versatile aspects of a brush in 3DCoat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"brush_options_panel\">Brush Options Panel<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components#brush_options_panel\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/brush-options\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brush Options Panel<\/a><br \/>The Brush Options panel contains most of the brush-related functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"top_bar_tool_parameters\">Top Bar Tool Parameters<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components#top_bar_tool_parameters\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/brush-top-bar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Top Bar Tool Parameters<\/a><br \/>The upper Brush Parameters Panel contains toggles for functions like \u201cDepth, Smoothing, Opacity, and Glossiness\u201d with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/conditions-limiter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Conditions<\/a>&nbsp;in the Paint Room in the form of a switchable icon (that switches between Mouse response and Tablet Response).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"conditions_height_color_limiter\">Conditions (Height\/Color Limiter)<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components#conditions_height_color_limiter\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/conditions-limiter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Height\/Color Limiter Conditions<\/a><br \/>Select how the depth, color, and Gloss of your brush strokes are affected by colors, height, and other parameters. Remember to set it to \u201cNone\u201d when you finish using this option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"strips_panel\">Strips Panel<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components#strips_panel\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/the-strips-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strips Panel<\/a><br \/>Strips allow you to make repeating patterns along your strokes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stencils_panel\">Stencils Panel<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components#stencils_panel\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/stencils-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stencils Panel<\/a><br \/>Stencils are used as a way to mask (shield) an area from sculpting and painting for pen depth and transparency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"smart_materials\">Smart Materials<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components#smart_materials\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/smart-materials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Painting with Smart Materials<\/a><br \/>Smart Materials allow you to paint with physically accurate materials, as well as create them. They can be projected upon your mesh with various methods and allow for advanced textures to be painted very quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stencil_smart_material_preview_options\">Stencil &amp; Smart Material Preview Options<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components#stencil_smart_material_preview_options\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/paint\/mask-material-preview-panel\/\">Preview Options<\/a><br \/>When activating one of the Materials or Stencils, or both simultaneously, you\u2019ll have a new panel on the screen.<br \/>This panel contains all of the editable functions for both&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/smart-materials\/\">Smart Materials<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/stencils-panel\/\">Stencils<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; All of these combined bring together a very powerful Brush Engine and make it easy to achieve normally difficult paint or sculpting tasks a whole lot easier.
