This panel list by folders brushes within 3DCoat. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"273\" height=\"121\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/positive.webp?wsr\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13341\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In alphas panel, when you import a new brush Brushes Panel (<strong>+ icon<\/strong>), there is an option &#8220;Positive alpha&#8221; that means: &#8220;<em>If enabled, the top left pixel value will not be subtracted from the alpha depth<\/em>.&#8221; This improve alpha handling and brush engine capabilities addressing issues where 16-bit TIF alphas were being converted to 8-bit or causing errors in external editors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your alphas are only grayscale, and you won&#8217;t add color, then using the 1 channel since the channel will be converted to Alpha and Height and you don&#8217;t need to worry about it and then you shouldn&#8217;t have any trouble with them and you you can edit them on any software if necessary, which is the easiest way since it is only 1 channel, and if you need color for whatever reason for 16 bits, you can use the RGBA. <br \/>If you want to add color, then convert it to RGB, but then you are limited with just that and you have to add the Alpha channel in GIMP, because if not, you will only use RGB that means that Green channel (3 CH: 1, 2, 3 = RGB, 2= A, H) would be the one in charge with the Alpha and the Height, which makes it awkward because in the end, only colors that are on the Green would be displayed on 3DCoat and depending on how much green it has or not, it will vary on heightmap and the alpha on it, so other colors might look faded and weird. <br \/>So using the Alpha channel would make it easier (4 CH: 1, 2, 3 = RGB, 4 = A, H)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alphas imported from images (including exr) may be mixed positive and negative, it allows making more realistic skin details. Negative alphas work for draw\/extrude-like brushes in sculpt room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional option: Alphas may be imported as rounds with accurate falloff, it simplifies making alphas from the raw textures a lot. This option available in alphas palette or using drag&amp;drop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can add your own brushes in TGA, PSD, or ABR format (the pen format used in Adobe Photoshop). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press on the \u201cFolder\u201d icon to add it. The brush added will appear in the list of brushes available.<br \/>You can also use a 3D model as a brush. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A brush can be 8 bit depth color, and provided image could contains an alpha channel. In this case, the alpha channel will be used as a mask for depth. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you use the Edit Ext. option, when you return to 3DCoat, will automatically convert your 16-bis alpha into 8-bits. 3DCoat can not manage 16bit \/per channell, but can manage 16bit\/alpha as Tiff only. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you want to work with 16 alpha bit, use TIF only. To modify the alpha use edit as 16-Bit TIF.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All other extensions like PSD, JPG, etc will be automatically converted to 8-bits. 3DCoat only accepts TIF, PNG, EXR to maintain the 16-bits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#f1f1f1\">\n<p>Many software can not full support Tiff layer channels. Only Photoshop and Gimp can manage Tiff alpha as brush editor.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"g7ab66293e81b\">Sequence paint with multi-alpha<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use the Shift or Ctrl key to select multiple alphas for the brush to use one at a time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video height=\"720\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1280 \/ 720;\" width=\"1280\" controls src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/multi-alpha.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need to manually select each alpha from the Brushes Panel to do multi-alpha painting. <br \/>The order in which you shift+select them matters.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"463\" height=\"276\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/brushesSelected.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/brushesSelected.png 463w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/brushesSelected-300x179.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 463px) 100vw, 463px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Select several brushes at the same time (shift+LMB) and paint to sequence paint. <br \/>Using CTRL or SHIFT to select several pens, you will see several pens selected in the preview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"gda9bab7ed17e\">Brush radius<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components:brushes#brush_radius\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to change the Brush radius, use keys \u201c[\u201c and \u201c]\u201d or the mouse wheel (provided the correspondent adjustments were made in the Preferences menu).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#e6e6e6\">\n<p>If you wish to rotate brush by mouse instead by hotkey, can set it in &#8220;Camera-&gt;Customize Navigation-&gt;ActionType: Start Pen Rotation&#8221;. This can be any combination you want, even &#8220;SHIFT+mouse move&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"depth_pressure\">Depth Pressure<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components:brushes#depth_pressure\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>To change depth, press \u201c-\u201d and \u201c+\u201d or the mouse wheel (provided the corresponding adjustments were made in the Preferences menu). You can do the same using sliders in the top pen panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"smooth\">Smooth<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components:brushes#smooth\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>First, press SHIFT and draw again. You will see the surface getting smoothed.<br \/>Change the smoothing intensity using the \u201cSmoothing\u201d slider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"straight_lines\">Straight Lines<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components:brushes#straight_lines\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>First, press and hold on LMB, then press SHIFT and draw again. Then you are able to draw very straight lines, just like the way in Photoshop. Click CTRL and draw \u2013 Cavities are drawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rotate_a_brush\">Rotate a Brush<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components:brushes#rotate_a_brush\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/lib\/exe\/detail.php?id=general%3Ainterface_navigation%3Abrush_components%3Abrushes&amp;media=general:interface_navigation:brush_components:brsuhrotation.jpg\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/lib\/exe\/detail.php?id=general%3Ainterface_navigation%3Abrush_components%3Abrushes&amp;media=general:interface_navigation:brush_components:brsuhrotation.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/lib\/exe\/fetch.php?w=200&amp;tok=5f4ced&amp;media=general:interface_navigation:brush_components:brsuhrotation.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br \/>You can see the red line rotating on the Brush cursor when \u201c(\u201c or \u201c)\u201d is pressed. If you choose an asymmetrical Brush shape, then this rotation shows the Brush orientation.<br \/>You may use hot keys \u201c(\u201c and \u201c)\u201d or the mouse wheel (under correspondent settings in the Preferences menu) to rotate the pen counterclockwise or clockwise accordingly. Parameters of rotation range from 1 to 360 degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#e6e6e6\">\n<p>The Brush (or Alpha) panel allows you to select images that can be used to create different brush profiles.<br \/>These are \u201cprofiles\u201d that affect both the depth of the Brush application and the shape of the \u201cbristles\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"g26f0434f4d72\">Each 8 bit brush includes 4 Layers as Painting channels<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>In 3DCoat, 8 bit Alphas consist of four painting channels, and each \u201cBrush\u201d includes 4 Layers that arrange themselves into Color-Transparency, HeightMap, Specular and EraseMask. <br \/>Read all the specifications <a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/brushes-alphas\/create-brushes-decals\/\">on this document.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The order of these Layers in the external editor is important. Looking at each of these individually:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Color\/Transparency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Height\/Depth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specular<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Erase Mask<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So each Brush can paint multiple channels at the same time if you choose to. Making them less of an \u201cAlpha\u201d and more of a multi-channel image brush tip. <br \/>We maintain the term \u201cAlpha\u201d to keep with the industry standard terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#e6e6e6\">\n<p>Brush Alphas <a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/brushes-alphas\/create-a-brush-from-a-3d-object\/\">can also be built from 3D object files<\/a>, extracting the height map based on the model view.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose a Brush you like from the list of icons. Press on the \u201cFolder\u201d icon to add more.<br \/>You can add your own Brushes in TGA, PSD, or ABR format (the format used in Adobe Photoshop).<br \/>The Brush added will appear in the list of Brushes available. You can also use a 3D model as a pen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A brush can be 8 bit colored, provided the image contains an alpha channel. <br \/>In this case, the alpha channel will be used as a mask for depth. Use CTRL or SHIFT to select several brushes, you will see several brushes selected in the preview, these will be used randomly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"brush_right-click_options\">Brush Right-Click Options<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components:brushes#brush_right-click_options\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Right-clicking on any unselected Brush alpha invokes a comprehensive list of alpha editing functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brush Options<\/strong>&nbsp;Opens the \u201cBrush Options\u201d panel.<br \/><strong>Delete Brush:<\/strong>&nbsp;Deletes the selected Brush.<br \/><strong>Save to PSD\/TIF:<\/strong>&nbsp;Saves the selected Brush alpha to either file format.<br \/>.PSD is more intuitive, while .TIF is more precise, giving you more channels to save and manipulate elsewhere.<br \/>.TIF can contain seven channels &#8211; RGB, alpha, height, specular, and the \u201cErase mask\u201d.<br \/><strong>Load from PSD\/TIF:<\/strong>&nbsp;This replaces the alpha that has been right-clicked on with an of your choice, save in either the .psd or .tif formats.<br \/><strong>Edit in the external editor:<\/strong>&nbsp;Creates a \u201clive\u201d connection between 3DCoat and the external editor you have specified in the \u201cPreferences\u201d section (The default editor is Photoshop).<br \/>Selecting this option opens the specified editor, and any changes you make and save from the editor are automatically loaded back into 3DCoat.<br \/><strong>Edit as 16-bit TIF:<\/strong>&nbsp;This allows you to save in 16-bit format rather than 8-bit. Using this option causes the Brush to be saved as a .psd file, allowing it to be reloaded automatically each time it is edited and saved in the external editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"brush_drop-down_menu\">Brush Drop-Down Menu<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components:brushes#brush_drop-down_menu\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/brush-panel-drop-down.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/brush-panel-drop-down.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/brush-panel-drop-down-13x12.jpeg 13w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>On the right side of the tab, you\u2019ll see an arrow pointing down. This opens a set of functions allowing you to view and change the current Brush Settings, Add and Create new Brush Folders, Add Brush \u201cPackages\u201d as well, and choose a display size for your Brush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By clicking this, there will be many more advanced options:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Refresh Brush Preview:<\/strong>&nbsp;Refreshes the Alpha icon.<br \/><strong>Brush Options Panel:<\/strong>&nbsp;Opens Brush Options Panel.<br \/><strong>Add New Folder:<\/strong>&nbsp;This allows you to choose a pre-defined folder of alpha shapes to be added to the \u201cFolder\u201d list.<br \/>This option will allow you to copy the Brush (that you right-click on), to a folder named in the \u201cFolder List\u201d you have previously defined. All the \u201cNew folder\u201d names you have defined will appear here.<br \/><strong>Add Existing Folder:<\/strong>&nbsp;Allows you to choose a single brush from a folder, thus adding all the brushes in the folder to be included in the folder, now with the name of the chosen file, which is then listed in the \u201cFolder\u201d selection list.<br \/><strong>Add pictures from an existing folder:<\/strong> A new Brushes\/Strips folder with the same name will be created. Select at least one file to automatically add all the files from the folder to the list.<br \/><strong>Add Brushes from package:<\/strong>&nbsp;Adds Brushes that have been packaged into a \u201cPenpack\u201d file format.<br \/>If you want to create your own package and share your custom Brushes, please RMB and use the command create .penpack.<br \/><strong>Folder:<\/strong>&nbsp;Select a folder with Brushes. A selection list of all folders you have enabled 3DCoat to access. The icons from this chosen folder will be visible in the \u201cBrushes Panel\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Icon Size:<\/strong>&nbsp;You can also change the size of the icons to the size specified. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tiny:<\/strong>&nbsp;Sets the alpha icon set to a very small size. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Normal:<\/strong>&nbsp;Sets the alpha icon set to the default size, as seen when the program opens for the first time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Large:<\/strong>&nbsp;Sets the alpha icon to a size larger than the default size.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Huge:<\/strong>&nbsp;Sets the alpha icon set to a bigger size.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tutorials\">Tutorials<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:interface_navigation:brush_components:brushes#tutorials\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/CSYjaq330W8?list=UUz7E0meXd2yMj4TKY2h0Rbg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Replicating Objects on Model Surface<\/a>:<\/strong>&nbsp;This video begins a demonstration of various techniques one can use to create an object in 3DCoat, and either generate a 3D Brush alpha from it or replicate instances of it along the surface of another object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/5yr-7oSrXIc\"><strong>How drag your alphas in 3DCoat:<\/strong><\/a> A quick explanation of how to use alphas in 3DCoat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/VYo5aPvPHfw\">Brush Preview Options:<\/a><\/strong> This video demonstrates Brush Preview options in 3DCoat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/GFFJUTEpv-g?list=PL0614F2A03AD725CD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Creating Custom Brush Curves &amp; Move Stamp Brush<\/a>:<\/strong>&nbsp;This video demonstration covers two new features in 3DCoat. This allows you to preview the result yet move it about the model until you&#8217;re happy with the placement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Esk9iPhHYDI\">Custom clipped decals:<\/a><\/strong> quick video tutorial about a neat little feature texturing and painting. <br \/>Basically you can create especially Alpha cropped decals of any kind for texture painting. <br \/>Basically what you got to do is it&#8217;s not like a regular PNG or Targa or whatever that you would load in as a 512&#215;512 or 1024&#215;1024 image, you actually have to set up a multi layered PSD in Photoshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/BjywvUVlCTQ?list=UUz7E0meXd2yMj4TKY2h0Rbg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Square Brush Alpha Support<\/a>:<\/strong>&nbsp;This video demonstrates the support for square brush alphas in 3DCoat.
