{"id":2244,"date":"2022-09-19T17:41:50","date_gmt":"2022-09-19T17:41:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/?post_type=manual_documentation&#038;p=2244"},"modified":"2025-06-07T09:11:52","modified_gmt":"2025-06-07T09:11:52","slug":"different-forms-of-resolution","status":"publish","type":"manual_documentation","link":"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/getting-started\/different-forms-of-resolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Different Forms of \u201cResolution\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Within 3DCoat, resolution can be summarized by the terms \u201cPerceived Resolution\u201d, \u201cActual Resolution\u201d, \u201cViewport Resolution\u201d and \u201cExport Resolution\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"perceived_resolution\">Perceived Resolution<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:paint_workspace:resolution#perceived_resolution\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Among those who produce 3D content for \u201cEntertainment- Based\u201d uses, applying techniques that produce a believable effect while using the fewest number of actual hardware and software resources is the most desirable way to structure any given project with regard to resolution.<br \/>Broadly speaking, these project assets can be divided into \u201cGame Assets\u201d and \u201cFilm (or Video) Assets\u201d.&nbsp;Game assets use the fewest resources and the highest level of \u201cPerceived Resolution\u201d &#8211; while Film assets can use resolution resources more liberally.<br \/>In the Entertainment Industry, artists produce assets that require textures to achieve the element of believability and realism.&nbsp;In essence, the textures produced create the \u201cillusion\u201d of resolution or detail.<br \/>A model&#8217;s polygonal structure is secondary to the economical use of textures &#8211; which include Diffuse, Specular, Normal, Bump, and Displacement Maps as the most common.&nbsp;These Maps work together to produce the illusion of resolution and detail &#8211; a model\u2019s \u201cPerceived Resolution\u201d.&nbsp;These are the most common \u201ctricks\u201d CG artists use to produce their realistic \u201cillusions\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"actual_resolution\">Actual Resolution<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:paint_workspace:resolution#actual_resolution\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Actual mesh resolution is what you are using when working in Voxel space or Surface Mode. It is that resolution that is exported when your model will later be used in CAD and CAM applications that make no use of the techniques common in the entertainment industry.<br \/>Within 3DCoat, all modifications to models for these purposes take place in the Voxel Room and Surface Mode.<br \/>Voxels and \u201cSurface Skins\u201d provide the closest representation of a finished model prototype&#8217;s \u201cActual Resolution\u201d. &nbsp;A unique set of Export commands can be found in the \u201cFile\u201d menu, which allows for saving your model to be used in various forms of 3D cutting and printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"viewport_resolution\">Viewport Resolution<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:paint_workspace:resolution#viewport_resolution\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>3DCoat handles resolution, in the Paint Room, in a unique way, by means of the Viewport &#8211; in order to give you a real-time representation of models and their associated textures as they are created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can designate how much \u201cViewport Resolution\u201d will be used, which is a temporary representation of a model and its associated textures. In essence, you can assign the amount of real-time subdivision that is visible while you paint your textures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This \u201cViewport Resolution\u201d can be different than the final exported resolution of your model and its associated textures, which are assigned as a final step for use in 3rd party applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"export_resolution\">Export Resolution<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:paint_workspace:resolution#export_resolution\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the resolution of both the retopologized and exported mesh itself, along with the texture maps that are associated with an exported model file.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"parent":2041,"menu_order":6,"template":"","manualdocumentationcategory":[9],"manual_doc_tag":[],"class_list":["post-2244","manual_documentation","type-manual_documentation","status-publish","hentry","manualdocumentationcategory-manual"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.3 -
