{"id":2256,"date":"2022-09-19T17:51:40","date_gmt":"2022-09-19T17:51:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/?post_type=manual_documentation&#038;p=2256"},"modified":"2026-04-07T11:24:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T11:24:22","slug":"sculpt","status":"publish","type":"manual_documentation","link":"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/sculpt\/","title":{"rendered":"Sculpt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This room is home to some of the tools and features of 3D sculpting. <br \/>The Sculpt Room consists of two working modes,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/sculpt\/voxel-mode\/\">Voxels<\/a>,&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/sculpt\/surface-mode\/\">Surfaces<\/a>&nbsp;(polygons). <br \/><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/cS9h0hvrkeY\">Voxel and Surface Modes<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can begin in&nbsp;Voxel mode&nbsp;for rough sketches and eventually move your sculpture into&nbsp;Surface mode&nbsp;(for increased performance, memory preservation, and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/VTuugkmKKMk?list=PLvD5VNbc8nSO9FBZI5L_U6JEONQGecR1v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">fine detail work<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Voxel Conversion Dialog Options\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H8aZBVpTqXw?list=UUz7E0meXd2yMj4TKY2h0Rbg\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/sculpt\/voxel-mode\/\">Voxel Tools<\/a>&nbsp;lend themselves to freeform \u201cBrush-Based\u201d sculpting operations, giving the artist the freedom to build with the equivalents of clay, wax, wood, stone, and paint. <br \/>3DCoat also makes full use of the possibilities of your graphic tablet. <br \/>Other tools provide the necessary precision for the construction of mechanical model forms.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"457\" height=\"363\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/SculptingTips.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/SculptingTips.jpg 457w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/SculptingTips-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 3DCoat, the Surface mode is a complimentary platform and has some unique tools and advantages, such as Dynamic Subdivision built into the brushes and some more options\/modifiers within the Tool Options panel. <br \/>It&#8217;s a bit better (with more nuanced brush control) at higher resolutions, although Voxels perform quite well at high resolutions, also. It is also the mode that stores Sculpt Layers, however, and you can project Voxel Sculpting edits onto a Surface copy. <br \/>In summary, both platforms have their own unique features and capabilities, which is why we make it easy to switch between them at any point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Voxel mode<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/sculpt\/voxel-mode\/pure-voxel-sculpting\/\">Voxels<\/a>&nbsp;are, by nature, memory, and processor intensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is most practical to start sculpting in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/sculpt\/voxel-mode\/\">Voxels<\/a>&nbsp;with the least resolution required to capture the most basic form of the overall model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once basic form and structure are achieved, you can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/LljQVFFfQSs?list=PLvD5VNbc8nSO9FBZI5L_U6JEONQGecR1v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Resample<\/a>&nbsp;or use the \u201cRes+\u201d tool to advance to a higher level of detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019d like to preserve the different stages of modeling as represented by resolution (from low to high), simply duplicate a layer before applying \u201cRes+\u201d (Resampling) and proceeding with your sculpting operations.<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:sculpt_workspace#surface_mode\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Surface mode<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Working on <a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/sculpt\/surface-mode\/\">Surface mode<\/a>, the wonderful thing about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/sculpt\/surface-mode\/surface-tools\/\">Surface Mode Tools<\/a>&nbsp;is that you can work with incredible speed and accuracy. <br \/>If some polygons begin to become stretched, you may \u201cRe-Skin\u201d the whole model (affecting only your latest revisions) by simply pressing the \u201cEnter\u201d key, replacing these stretched areas with a very consistent and organized, triangulated mesh structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At any time during your Surface Sculpting session, you may either return to pure Voxel Space or move directly to the&nbsp;Retopology Workspace using&nbsp;Auto Retopo&nbsp;functions or perform all of your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/retopology\/left-tool-panel\/\">Manual Retopo<\/a>&nbsp;operations.<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:sculpt_workspace#liveclay_mode\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:sculpt_workspace#primitives\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brushes &amp; Alphas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Notable among these are those tools found in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/strokes\/\">Strokes \u201cE\u201d Panel<\/a>, a selection of spline and polygon-based drawing tools which can be positioned and altered as you work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the Sculpt environment is based largely on the use of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/brushes\/\">Brushes<\/a>, it is important to grasp their nature and composition, for it relates to many other areas and Workspaces found within the 3DCoat application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#f1f1f1\">\n<p>The Alpha controls the shape of the brush. Alpha is a grayscale intensity map. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/brushes\/\"><em>Brushes<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;consist primarily of the form of the Brush as defined by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/brushes\/\">Brush Alphas<\/a>&nbsp;found in the main Brush Panel, as well as their corresponding \u201cOptions\u201d found in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/brush-options\/\">Brush Options Panel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sculpt Brushes can be adjusted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/\">on the fly<\/a>&nbsp;using the \u201cRight Mouse Button\u201d and horizontal or vertical gestures within the 3D Viewport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Corresponding slider settings can be found within the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/brush-options\/\">Brush Parameters Panel<\/a>, which show and augment the Mouse-Based parameters and are found at the top of the 3DCoat interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/strokes\/\">Brush strokes<\/a>&nbsp;can also be modified using functions from the&nbsp;Smart Materials&nbsp;on surface mode,&nbsp;Stencils,&nbsp;Strips, Models, and Splines Panels when the context is appropriate. <br \/>The <a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/brush-components\/strokes\/\">Stroke<\/a> controls how your brush moves across the surface of your model. Several strokes can be used in 3DC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Autopick<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Bdfsul0j5xc?list=PLvD5VNbc8nSO9FBZI5L_U6JEONQGecR1v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Autopick<\/a>&nbsp;feature in the Sculpt workspace is enabled by default and allows the user to begin sculpting on a new object immediately without selecting the layer in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/sculpt\/sculpt-tree\/\">Sculpt Layers Panel<\/a> first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Statistics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>To view the current statistics of your Voxel Sculpture, or to obtain \u201cTool Tips\u201d in expanded form, just look at the \u201cStatistics\u201d Panel located at the bottom left of the interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Import \/ Export<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the \u201cFile\u201d menu to access all&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/sculpt\/import-to-sculpt-room\/\">Import<\/a>&nbsp;functions for bringing in external creations into the Sculpt Workspace, and use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/sculpt\/exporting-from-the-sculpt-room\/\">Export<\/a>&nbsp;functions for producing various direct Polygonal and Raw Voxel versions of your sculpture &#8211; to be used and modified in external CAD and 3D printing applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"new_brush_engine\">New brush engine<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:sculpt_workspace#new_brush_engine\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>This new brush engine lets you modify controls for the sculpting tools. There are a wide variety of brushes, each with a unique property.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/manual\/workspaces-rooms\/sculpt\/sculpt-brush-options\/\">New brush system<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:sculpt_workspace#voxel_mode\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"top_bar_tool_parameters\">Top Bar Tool Parameters<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=general:sculpt_workspace#top_bar_tool_parameters\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The Top Tool Bar menu contains toggles for functions and is customized according to which workspace you are working on.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"20\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-60-1024x20.png?wsr\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10972\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-60-1024x20.png 1024w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-60-300x6.png 300w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-60-768x15.png 768w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-60.png 1529w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>As some pen options are on the top menu bar, you\u2019ll notice that when you change your tool, so will a portion of the menu bar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kbWlDtBGiGA\">Conform Retopo Mesh:<\/a><\/strong> Conform retopo mesh with voxel scene so that changes in Sculpt room will update retopo mesh. Pay attention that only changes done with pose, transform and move tool will be taken into account. <br \/><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tbwOTotBdrM\">On Plane:<\/a><\/strong> Constraint strokes to a plane. Use RMB to define plane. Click the Plane Opt. button to further edit how the plane functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#f1f1f1\">\n<p>In &#8220;On plane&#8221; mode the wheel (or CTRL Wheel) may optionally be used to move the plane back and forward.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"331\" height=\"87\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-69.png?wsr\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-69.png 331w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-69-300x79.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 331px) 100vw, 331px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yw3CRsIV8aU\">Remove stretching (Surface mode):<\/a><\/strong> remeshes directly beneath the brush and brings much of the dynamic Tessellation features in Brushes to the Standard Surface mode brushes.<br \/><strong>Invert Tool:<\/strong> Invert Tool. Toggle the function of the current tool. Like holding down the CTRL key. <br \/>Topsy Turvy! Up is down, down is up.<br \/><strong>Steady Stroke:<\/strong> In this mode strokes will be more accurate because of additional trajectory smoothing.<br \/><strong>Mouse &amp; Pen icon:<\/strong> Allow the brush radius to be dependent on brush pressure.<br \/><strong>Padlock icon:<\/strong> In this mode the visible on-screen radius of the brush will be locked. Use this option when you want to change the radius of the brush by simply moving the model backward and forward.<br \/><strong>Edit Curve:<\/strong> Please define how brush radius depends on brush pressure. Curve will be used only if brush radius is allowed to be dependent on brush pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"575\" height=\"546\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-70.png?wsr\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-70.png 575w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-70-300x285.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br \/><strong>Radius:<\/strong> Change the Brush Radius. Use keys &#8220;[&#8221; to decrease and &#8220;]&#8221; to increase.<br \/><strong>Setup Tapering Parameters:<\/strong> specify tapering parameters. Tapering allows to modulate or replace pen pressure with values got from the curve. Of course you need to enable or disable dependency of radius or opacity on pressure to see the effect. Tapering itself just modifies pressure, but how you will use it, it is on your taste. Note that tapering length is in multiples of the current brush radius.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"508\" height=\"557\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-71.png?wsr\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-71.png 508w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-71-274x300.png 274w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Focal Shift:<\/strong> This slider adjusts the crispness of the alpha, corrected around the center point. Higher values produce softer edges on most shapes. <br \/><strong>Falloff:<\/strong> Vary radial falloff of the depth.<br \/><strong>Depth padlock icon:<\/strong> In lock depth mode, absolute brush depth does not rely on brush radius. In standard mode the radius and depth are proportional. <br \/><strong>Depth:<\/strong> Change the Brush Pressure. Use &#8220;-&#8221; and &#8220;+&#8221;<br \/><strong>Mouse &amp; pen icon:<\/strong> Allow the amount of smoothing to be dependent on brush pressure.<br \/><strong>Smoothing:<\/strong> Adjust the degree of smoothing applied while drawing with the SHIFT key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also collapse\/expand settings on the toolbar, such as Falloff, Depth, etc. <br \/>This can be done by clicking in the immediate area around the setting you wish to minimize. Use it to increase the contrast of lighting.
