Note that all visible meshes from the Retopo Groups panel will be used. If you do not want this to happen, hide the meshes you don\u2019t want to use first.<br \/><strong>Shift (X, Y &amp; Z):<\/strong>&nbsp;Shifts the mesh to be imported along the selected axis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Import DICOM Slices<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"248\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/importsculpt-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/importsculpt-2.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/importsculpt-2-300x186.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>DICOM is the primary file format for storing and transferring medical images in a hospital\u2019s database. There are other file formats for storing images. Besides DICOM, you may also see medical images saved in the NIFTI format (file suffix \u201c.nii\u201d), PNG, JPEG format, or even Python file objects like NumPy arrays.<br \/>So why use DICOM? Other file formats may be more convenient, but everything uses the DICOM format in clinical practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/towardsdatascience.com\/understanding-dicom-bce665e62b72\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Understanding DICOM<\/a>:<\/strong>&nbsp;How to read, write, and organize medical images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #cf2e2e;\" class=\"ugb-highlight\">We want to emphasize that 3DCoat does not have any medical licenses, and 3DCoat is not intended for medical purposes.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Import Mesh for Voxelization<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Import polygonal mesh to be voxelized in Sculpt room. This tool lets you import polygonal meshes to convert into voxels. The mesh should be closed.<br \/>If it is not closed, you should import it with the thickness or make it closedLet us first go over some of the basic functions of this tool:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"561\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/importsculpttooloptions-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/importsculpttooloptions-2.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/importsculpttooloptions-2-214x300.jpeg 214w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Select mesh:<\/strong>&nbsp;Selects a mesh stored on your hard drive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pick from retopo:<\/strong>&nbsp;If you have something retopologized in the Retopo Room, you can use the mesh to merge to voxels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>On pen:<\/strong>&nbsp;Turns any merged mesh into a \u201cMerge on the Fly\u201d tool, which allows you to merge any object at the cursor position (respecting the base object\u2019s normals and intrusion into or extrusion above the base object). Adjust the merged object\u2019s size by right-click dragging left or right, and adjust its intrusion or extrusion by right-click dragging up or down.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Subdivide:<\/strong>&nbsp;Subdivides your un-merged mesh, giving it more initial resolution before merging.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transform:<\/strong>&nbsp;Allows you to position any merged object with a \u201cTransform widget\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shift (X, Y &amp; Z):<\/strong>&nbsp;Shifts the un-merged mesh along the selected axis inside a bounding box in local space.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Presets:<\/strong>&nbsp;This tool has several presets; you are encouraged to explore them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Merge separate volumes:<\/strong>&nbsp;Merges each \u201csub-object\u201d to its unique volume.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Respect negative volumes:<\/strong>&nbsp;If an un-merged object has \u201c_negative\u201d listed in its name &#8211; (indicating a subtractive sub-object inside the file), this function will subtract this volume when merging it with other sub-objects. When using this feature as a \u201cnegative\u201d or subtractive boolean object, you should know in advance. <br \/>This function is great for creating greebles and nurnies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"304\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/greebles-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/greebles-2.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/greebles-2-300x228.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"merging_on_pen\">Click to place (Merging On Pen)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/primitivestooloptions.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3309\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>One of the most fluid and spontaneous ways to add nearly any predefined shape, model, greeble, or nurnie to your existing sculpture is to use the \u201cImport Panel\u201d or, for more frequently used elements, the \u201cWindows &gt; Panels &gt; Sculpt Models\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just choose the \u201cClick to place\u201d option to access this powerful set of functions.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\" id=\"block-42820768-0a13-4463-a3c5-baa9980a1b63\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/image-123.png?wsr\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image-123.png\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>When this option is chosen, you can assemble a composite of any number of shapes, the on-the-fly &#8211; interactively changing the shape\u2019s position, scale, rotation, and \u201cpenetration\u201d or \u201clevitation\u201d on, into, or above the surface of another object or shape.<br \/>Every shape added in this way can be positively combined or negatively subtracted from any existing shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mouse gestures adjust the scale, position, and penetration depth of your \u201cMerged\u201d object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use the \u201cRight Mouse Button\u201d and drag to the left or right to Scale the Merged object.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the \u201cRight Mouse Button\u201d and drag up or down to adjust the surface penetration of the Merged object.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Change the position of this object, respecting the orientation \u201cNormals\u201d of the object that is being added simply by moving the mouse cursor where desired and sliding its preview along the surface of the existing object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019d like to use another point in space to base your primitive transform value from, choose the \u201cMove Only Gizmo\u201d option and then reposition that gizmo. <br \/>At any time, you may reset any axis or position of your primitive shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"importing_for_voxel_mode\">Importing for Voxel mode<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=import_export:importing_into_the_sculpt_workspace#importing_for_voxel_mode\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The bottom line is that when you import an external model as Voxel, you are essentially changing its nature into a 3DCoat volume-based \u201cSculpture\u201d &#8211; unique to the 3DCoat environment.<br \/>Most imported 3D objects are polygon-based, and because of this, they need to be translated into a Voxel volume of a given \u201cResolution\u201d. This resolution depends on the scale you specify for this object upon import. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>External objects enter the Voxel Room either by way of the \u201cOpening Dialogs\u201d, the \u201cFile\/Import\u201d menu, or by \u201cMerging\u201d operations.<br \/>In all 3 cases, your object is introduced into the Voxel Room surrounded by the \u201cTransform Widget\/Gizmo\u201d. You can provide your imported model with the resolution it needs by visually scaling it up in the Viewport or by numerical entry. Once the proper Scale\/Resolution is obtained &#8211; press \u201cEnter\u201d to make it valid and permanent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you \u201cImport for voxelizing\u201d or when you \u201cImport\u201d an external object there is an interesting and useful function called \u201cOn pen\u201d, which allows you to interactively place instances of your imported mesh with any scale, orientation, and penetration depth (if another object already exists in a Voxel Layer) all \u201con-the-fly\u201d and using the Mouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dragging with the Right button down:<br \/><\/strong>From right to left resizes the Merged object, up or down changes the \u201cpenetration\u201d depth of the Merged object into whatever object may already be present on a Voxel Layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suppose you have an object which exists in the \u201cModels\u201d Panel, and you wish to add this to a Voxel Layer. In that case, you can do this by simply clicking on its icon in the Panel, and you will be presented with a standard \u201cImport\u201d dialog, which will allow you to deal with it as you would any external model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"importing_for_surface_mode\">Importing for Surface Mode<a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/dokuwiki\/doku.php?id=import_export:importing_into_the_sculpt_workspace#importing_for_surface_mode\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also import directly into Surface Mode through the Opening Dialog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surface Mode is a subset of the Voxel Room but works entirely on surfaces (without volume). Surface Mode provides an adjustable triangular mesh skin representation of your imported model, which behaves similarly to voxels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once your imported model is in the Surface Mode workspace, you can use LiveClay, our \u201cDynamic Subdivision\u201d (localized subdivision) implementation. It subdivides without smoothing the object.
