“Red screen” (red window) means that “Gatekeeper” (a security feature in macOS) has isolated “3DCoat” executable from its data. This problem also manifests itself as “startup crash” on some machines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To solve the problem clear in Terminal quarantine attribute from “3DCoat” folder:
Terminal > xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine \/Applications\/3DCoat-2024.xx
(put your actually installed version in the command above). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3DCoat crashes (displays “red window”) on startup under macOS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\n

Instructions are for “3DCoat” version “2022.48”. Replace “2022.48” below with the downloaded version.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In case “3DCoat” crashes on startup (or displays a “red window”) then most probably “Gatekeeper” (which is a security feature built into macOS) has isolated the “3DCoat” executable file from its data. In the macOS crash log you will see * (asterisk means several random subfolders) in the line:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Path: \/private\/var\/folders\/*\/3DCoat.app\/Contents\/MacOS\/3DCoat<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To resolve the problem do the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Click Launchpad > inside the field Search type Terminal and then run it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Start to type the command xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine (press the space<\/strong> key at the end and do not<\/strong> press the enter<\/strong> key yet)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(you can copy that partial command into the clipboard with \u2318+C and then paste it into Terminal with \u2318+V but add <\/em>space<\/em><\/strong> at the end anyway)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Then click Finder > Go > Applications and drag & drop the folder “3DCoat-2022.48” (or any future upgrade) onto the Terminal window. The final command will look like $ xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine \/Applications\/3DCoat-2022.48 <\/em>(press the enter<\/strong> key to execute it)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. “3DCoat” should run now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe if you will check System Settings > Security & Privacy > General > click the lock to unlock the grayed fields > Allow apps downloaded from: (*) App Store and identified developers (instead of only App Store) then future “3DCoat” upgrades will start without the command above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step-by-step on how to install “3DCoat 2024” and check data integrity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Download “3DCoat-2024.xx.dmg” from here:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1<\/strong>. In the Terminal go into the “Downloads” folder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

% cd ~\/Downloads<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Make sure that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

% ls -l 3DCoat-2022.48.dmg returns size 963412266<\/strong> (bytes)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

% shasum 3DCoat-2022.48.dmg should return checksum e2fc81b32556cbcd5f9308f4582a981180828e12<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Clear extended attributes (among them could be “com.apple.quarantine”):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

% xattr -c 3DCoat-2022.48.dmg<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure that there is no attribute “com.apple.quarantine”:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

% ls -l@ 3DCoat-2022.48.dmg<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Open the disk image and, as always, drag & drop “3DCoat-2022” into the “Applications” icon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

% open 3DCoat-2022.48.dmg <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2<\/strong> checks the integrity of the downloaded disk image. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
