Is cavity same as curvature?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Yes and no.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Cavity <\/em><em>Map<\/em><em> focus on small details, while <\/em><em>C<\/em><em>urvature <\/em><em>Map<\/em><em> emphasize the overall shape of a surface, <\/em><em>it<\/em><em> map store the concave and convex edges of a mesh.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However &#8216;Cavity map&#8217; is different than \u201cCurvature map\u201d. A Curvature map actually store the concave and convex edges of a mesh. <em>Is also called Concavity, Convexity, Pits &amp; Peaks, Worn Edge.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The convex (white) <\/em><em>and<\/em><em> the concave (Black) <\/em><em>is <\/em><em>Curvature <\/em><em>map <\/em><em>and the transition between peaks and crevices (gr<\/em><em>a<\/em><em>y values) of the model <\/em><em>is <\/em><em>Cavity <\/em><em>map<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>To produce a <\/em><em>C<\/em><em>avity map that we could use as Curvature, we need more gr<\/em><em>a<\/em><em>y-scale values so that we can identify the convex (white), the concave (Black) and the transition between peaks and crevices (gr<\/em><em>a<\/em><em>y values) of the model.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8211; Cavity texture<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Focuses on small details like crevices, grooves, and indentations (cavity maps are also known as crevice maps).<br>They are a more detailed version of ambient occlusion maps.<br>Cavity maps can be useful for improving dirt masks, enhancing colors, and adding highlights.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8211; Curvature texture<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Focuses on the overall shape of a surface, showing where the surface curves inward or outward.<br>Curvature maps are also known as concavity, convexity, pits and peaks, or worn edge.<br>Curvature maps can be used to simulate edge wear, highlight details, and check for surface continuity.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Curvature can be both an RGB map encoding convexity\/concavity in separate channels, or a gray scale map encoding convex edges as white and concave edges as black like in the image <\/em><em>below<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I went ahead and exported cavity, it looks like a curvature map. Can i use that one as a curvature?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Select Cavity for Curvature. (the map generated is named Cavity at export).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"590\" height=\"205\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163614730.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10664\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163614730.png 590w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163614730-300x104.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 590px) 100vw, 590px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/forum\/uploads\/monthly_2025_01\/image.jpeg.d107f05f45f39d5072f90853fd7ed202.jpeg\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This map is often (erroneously) called Cavity, but more accurately a Cavity map can also be a white map with concave edges encoded as black.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3DCoat does not have the option to export both maps at the same time, but you can generate them using the Generate Curvature map tool.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"505\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163639221.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10665\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163639221.png 505w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163639221-253x300.png 253w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Utilize Normal maps during AO and Curvature baking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Other major new Improvement is the ability to utilize Normal maps during this baking process, so let&#8217;s go ahead and get started by hiding some of the layers. <br>Hold down the ALT key and select the visibility icon on one of these layers and the only one to leave intact is the one that has normal map information on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>You need to have the Normal map visible so that 3DCoat can utilize it during this baking process.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So now let&#8217;s go ahead and go to the Edit menu and choose Calculate Occlusion and Curvature maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pay attention that curvature consists of two components<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>First is local curvature that allows to detect small details, scratches. <br>Second is long-range curvature that flows smoothly and allows to detect large details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>If you need Gray Maps set intensity for both types: curvature or cavity.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Turn intensity up create a cavity map. (curvature intensity 400, long range curvature 10). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn intensity down create a curvature map. (curvature intensity 8, long range curvature 100).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another workflow is to use <strong>Local Curvature RGB for Cavity map<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"619\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163749850.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163749850.png 619w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163749850-300x96.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/forum\/uploads\/monthly_2025_01\/image.png.dd448a50c5874be504ee0957b36f2491.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <strong>Local Curvature<\/strong> for gray Curvature map<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"619\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163815218.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163815218.png 619w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163815218-300x136.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/forum\/uploads\/monthly_2025_01\/image.png.f69b98e01f09db3a45968c5c72e8bb23.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following this steps you can get this result:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"213\" height=\"144\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163834444.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10668\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/forum\/uploads\/monthly_2025_01\/image.png.50989ecd00142cc41a5f80f4248bf186.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">RGB Cavity map<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting from 3DCoat 2021.53 the RGB Cavity map was introduced as the default calculation method in Texturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>You can active RGB Cavity &#8220;Curvature&#8221; on Edit &gt; Preferences &gt; Tools.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"The Use of RGB Cavity in 3DCoat 2021\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c4IyZODzQBc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On Cavity map RGB each channel contains different information, like convexity in red and concavity in green for instance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cavity Area Width:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>This option requires the RGB cavity pre-calculated using the <em>Textures-&gt;Calculate curvature, Local Curvature RGB.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you first run the Curvature using RGB Cavity, the Light Baking Panel comes up.<br>Not change the settings Local Curvature RGB (you can change some later) and run the Curvature Calculation.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163950403.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10669\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163950403.png 620w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_163950403-300x92.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>Smart Material Editor<\/strong> this option appears in the Editor when RGB Cavity is selected as default. You may vary the width of the area of the cavity influence, make the cavity narrow or wide. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"575\" height=\"75\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-8.png 575w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image-8-300x39.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>* Before that, you need to remove the regular cavity layer if it already exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adjusting Cavity Area Width and Overall Cavity Modulator can give you some nice effects like several layers of old paint on top of each other. As is show on this video:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Use of Smart Materials in 3DCoat 2021\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TLzZ6BvCbtI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The curvature layer is required to use cavity\/curvature as a condition for materials or conditional painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you work with <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JUG4dmfNv8U\">Conditions painting<\/a> by layer, on the upper right side you can adjust degree &amp; contrast<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"511\" height=\"118\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_164054923.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_164054923.png 511w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_164054923-300x69.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 511px) 100vw, 511px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br>Remember that <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JUG4dmfNv8U\">Conditions painting<\/a> only work on freeze for sculpt surface mode or Surface Paint on vertex on Paint Room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the standard sculpting brushes do not respect <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JUG4dmfNv8U\">conditions<\/a>, only work on Freeze mask to restrict where surface sculpting tools will be applied to the surface of the model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Just a fast simple example:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Base layer<br>1st layer = Old Copper<br>2nd layer = Blue paint<br>3rd layer = Red paint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adjust each smart material differently using Adjusting Cavity Area Width and Overall Cavity Modulator.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_164127862.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10672\" srcset=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_164127862.png 800w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_164127862-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/documentation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/image_2025-01-31_164127862-768x547.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/3dcoat.com\/forum\/uploads\/monthly_2025_01\/image.jpeg.06b5974d49f5f238d330432456d630cb.jpeg\"><\/a>It is really not one smart material but 3 separate Smart materials on separate layers.<br>Can create it using any default Smart Materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow this steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open the Smart Material editor and the real time preview window, placing it over the model. <br>This is the most important because you get the real time view of the smart material and how it will be applied. <br>Do not go by as seen on the Smart Material Editor&#8217;s ball if you want real time feedback in this case. <br>Start Adjusting the Cavity Modulator and Cavity Area Width till you get the effect you want. <br>The picture above is the blue paint settings, it was the blue metal but looks like blue paint.
