  1. Yeah Sorry Don, this is an old tutorial by Andrew Price. Many things have changed then. In general, most of Andrew Price's tutorials are outdated. See how he uses these emitters - area lights? Now, you can use any lights you like, maintaining the same quality. IMO, he still doesn't understand how rapidly blender is growing. About cycles: A good render engine, a pure pathtracer. Here come the bad news. A pure pathtracer is not what makes us really happy. A bi-directional implementation is on the road map. We still waiting for baking capabilities. This is the last on this road map of course. This pathtracer, (octane as well) suffer from the ugly "termination" issue. It is impossible to render (decently) a low poly (with normal maps) figure. The renderer won't follow smooth shading as expected. The low poly topology will become visible between light and shadow areas. That said, I am a fan of this render engine. The nodes based UI is among the best I have seen.
  2. he he I like the second one a little more. Now, having some more crazy ideas, Taking full advantages of 3dcoat.
  3. I already admired it in BA forum. Amazing work.
  4. I'm not talking about all the shortcuts. The basics only. If icons are too small, we asked for this. We need plenty of space to work. We won't sacrifice it for helping newbies. Blender is a freeware. If this makes it hard for you, to show the same "respect" as on the other payed apps, well, I can't help you. Nobody can. Don't misunderstand me, I called it "respect" because this is what we can show in first place against these people who are working for free. After you feel comfortable with blender, then you can start criticizing as we all do. And, don't forget, bug reports, always. Donations always help, keep reminding it.
  5. edit mode is in the TAB ! In edit mode ctrl+TAB, vertex-edges-face select. In edit mode, W, ctrl+E, ctrl+F, and lot of other shortcuts. Shortcults everywhere.
  6. the Ui of these tools is very nice, though I was never a 3dmax user. About the dark side, I'm not sure… "Between Scylla and Charybdis" is more appropriate, However, to see blender as the alternative freeware of another application is OK To ask from blender developers to grab all the ideas around and bring them to blender, is another matter. Any fresh ideas in blender? Any innovations? There are a few. By example see the node based Cycles UI. (it doesn't look like other node systems, it reflects the coding of cycles) You know Abn, every day in the BA forum, I have to fight those who ask for a free z brush. All the set of the z-sculpting brushes. Blender has a simple and effective set of brushes, I even tried to copy one of them in zbrush (not much success). I also tried to "copy" some behavior in 3dcoat (no success either).
  7. ?? Blender navigation is fully customizable and zbrush navigation is the most friendly to wacom (or tablet) only users. I can't argue about the entire UI though. LOL As Ton Roosendaal (chairman of the Blender Foundation) mentioned, a UI reflects the essence of the entire code of an application. We should not expect any dramatic change on this. Fixes only. Blender's UI is the more friendly to developers, this open source rapid development. Don't expect Office like UI in blender. Neither modo has a that better Ui to offer IMO, nor maya, LW or Max. 3d applications they are, what should we expect? A friendly to newbies UI? Like SketchUp? Impossible for such vast applications.
  8. Antikythera mechanism, indeed. A miracle. Almost unbelievable. Based on Archimedes, probably. Made in Syracuse, I'm not sure. The ship seems it was coming from Rhodos to Italy. After all, the mechanism wasn't the only treasure on this cargo. All these masterpieces of art, all this sculpting, these were coming from the east. Probably. We can never be sure. As we can't be sure about the Riace bronze warriors.
  9. Amazing and beautiful. Engineering at its best. Thank you for the link! However, it has little to do with modern computing. It is closer on how an artist thinks though, An animator by example. On the other hand, the way ancient civilizations could bring water in their fields… this may looks closer to a CPU. What innovations are the ancestors of modern computing? The ancestors of Cybernetics?
  10. Interesting result there David. The new autopo follows hard surf areas well. It doesn't follow less carved areas (like the scale pattern) Something to do with the density? I tried to increase it a lot. It took for ever but it seems it worked a little better. Still, multithreaded but insists to use half of the power of my CPUs. Oh, the new autopo seems to suffer from endless spiral loops (like z remesher). I'm not sure if it will be ever possible to avoid this annoying thing. Still dreaming of the day we will be able to manually retopo a few parts (loops) and ask the app to fill the rest. LOL
  11. Thank you. I tested the new autoretopology only. I had some very interesting results. I already used some of them. (in my personal workflow lol) I noticed that half of the 16 threads of my dual xeon are in use when 3dc calculates topology. Is it normal? (OSX build)
  12. A seven hours distance. How to enjoy a beer and a cigar with your friend… To have some beers at 4:00 in the morning isn't too wise. I'll see what I can do about it. LOL
  13. ha ha OK David, we had some fun via google hangout. For sculpting sessions it is great. A dual display setup then. It is important for sculpting sessions. Indeed I noticed this. Just a little better. Right.
  14. I just tried the OSX build. The new auto retopology is impressive already. I didn't scale the original voxel because it was big enough. I tried to export the mesh (it seems this build is a demo?). I saved the file and I was able to export from the registered 3dc v4. Anyway, lot of manifolds near the symmetry line. A complete mess of overlapping faces there. I exported a ~2000 faces mesh. Lot of work to clean it (in blender) (edit: LOL, I figured out how to clean it up in 2 seconds in blender ) Great work Andrew, with the exception of this symmetry issue.
  15. Welcome, and welcome to this particular topic Raul. Almost there, a little more development is needed though (in blender) . Just a little. A very powerful combination. Considering that both apps have a lot of similar tools (not of the same quality always). But this is just fine. There's a lot of tex painting development in blender, right now. Still, long way to come close to 3dcoat on this (if ever). After a few test renders, you always tweak some tex maps in blender, without the need of going back to 3dcoat, that's good. On the other hand, both 3dcoat and blender offer powerful UV editors. The combination of both is unbeatable. I also enjoy the compatibility of the baked textures, the normal, the displ maps. 3dcoat may be powerful but still lacks of a multi resolution sculpting room. To bake maps from multires. Blender offers it (still some development is needed there). Yeah, it is a powerful combination already. More successful combination than the zbrush blender may be.
  16. Reposting AbnRanger's posted links to Andrew Price's videos on the UI issues in blender. You may agree or not, this is an excellent presentation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=xYiiD-p2q80 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIedljapuz0&feature=player_embedded Meanwhile, here's a test, just for fun. IMO not a very easy to do task. It heavily depends on the blender UV editor. A displacement test on a single mesh - twisted torus. (cycles render)
  17. Very impressive. A little magic! However, I wonder. How useful this tool really is? It isn't for foliage, hey Tony. You need separated leaves, not joined to a single mesh. Seriously, I'm trying hard to imagine a workflow based on this amazing tool. Cloning a whole hand? A nose or an eye, creating some monster? In such cases, booleans is the best way to go IMO. A gismo, adding elements from a library... etc etc . We have it already. Better have such assets separated and clone them (instancing) in your favorite massive 3d app - renderer. Zbrush offers something similar. "insert brushes". It is a much more sophisticated method though. Because it is based on their multires sculpting - baking workflow. Quite different.
  18. LOL Seriously, I prefer my two 24'' well calibrated monitors. I find it more useful than having a large one. If one of them was a cintiq 24 I could be happier but can't afford the cost. However I bought an intuos 5 large recently. This fits well on a 24'' monitor. Planning for a new computer in the next year. Something with twice the performance of my 2xXeon 16 threads 24GB machine. Else, I don't see a reason to upgrade.
  19. A damaged expensive computer turns to be another serious brake. This is my case LOL A seven years old core2duo laptop isn't for 3d serious work...
  20. When photography came up, what artists - 2d painters said about it? Degas loved photography, he also used it as reference in his dancers studies. After photography, now we know what is art, and, what is not art. This is what most artists said. What we do in art is to measure our thoughts, our feelings. This is all about art. IMO, this is why it exists. Start visiting museums. Try to forget 3d art for a moment. Try to stay away from any craftsmanship, anatomy, technology or other knowledge. Masterpieces may have a very deep impact to us. Warning! However, I really enjoyed the link. Impressive. I wonder, what Mr Spock could say about it. Fascinating ? Or, just interesting? (LOL)
