  1. The things that make OpenVDB a fantastic solution for rendering in feature film should also apply to general 3d modeling. You are right though only Andrew can say for sure. I do hope he looks into beefing up the voxel toolset as voxels are starting to gain ground in gaming and general production.
  2. Triangulated meshes can relatively easily get adapted in density, while typical Voxel implementations dice a volume evenly. While generally possible I think there's no product in the market which uses adaptive Voxel density. OpenVDB allows for adaptive density voxels, among many other things, like the point cloud to voxel conversion the original poster requested.
  3. Here's the paper describing VDB in detail and what advantages they have to other volume data structures: http://www.museth.org/Ken/Publications_files/Museth_TOG13.pdf
  4. I agree move topological functionality would be great, however the deeper functionality of how move topological works through brush auto masking is the functionality that should be studied, copied and built upon. Smooth peaks, smooth valleys, move topological and many others all come from the same base technology and can all be deeply customized.
  5. Thanks for the suggestions, but unfortunately they don't really hit the mark and I realize I should be more descriptive in what move topological does rather than just assume everyone knows what it is. Pretty handy brush, very useful for dealing with thin structures that are packed closely together. I can do the same thing with freezing/unfreezing parts of the mesh, little more time consuming is all.
  6. Yes, they are clear, which is why software development companies such as SideFX, Solid Angle and Pixar all contribute code to the OpenVDB project, yet retain full commercial rights to the software packages they develop and sell. The contributors license governs contributions of code to be included in OpenVDB, not software packages that implement and support OpenVDB.
  7. I did a quick search and it doesn't seem this has been discussed yet, but I was curious if there is any chance of 3d-coat gaining OpenVDB support/implementation for it's voxel room. http://www.openvdb.org/ I don't know 3d-coat well enough yet to know the ins and outs of it's voxel implementation, but it certainly looks like OpenVDB implementation would be an upgrade in functionality.
  8. I really hope 3dcoats implementation of sculpt layers is more robust than Zbrushes, so many caveats and conditions to use them without blowing things up they are frequently a cause of headache unless you plan well in advance how you are going to use them and then bake down when you are done with them. Layers in Zbrush are so awkward in their implementation and unevenly supported across the feature set that I seriously wonder if there isn't a better solution.
  9. I'm really enjoying 3d coat, however I am missing some of my favorite brush functionality from zbrush (really the only thing I miss from zbrush). Mainly I am missing the move topological brush and the smooth peaks brush, also is there functionality for auto masking like there is in Zbrush?
