  1. Heya, got similar issues once again.

I've made a gfycat vid of my latest colour/layer/transparency issues.

So I made this vid in v4.8.25 but I also then went and installed the new beta v4.8.32

Opening the same project/save file I got the exact same issue when I tried to paint.

I'll run down what's happening in the vid.

    1. You can see that in the layer labeled 'RustDirt' that I'm getting a combination of the smart material I have selected and the red colour that is in my picker. Notice that the only area that shows the red colour is where it sits over the layer titled 'hand metal wear'

    2. I made another layer (Layer 12) to see if it was a layer issue, sure enough that layer doesn't inherit the red from the picker.

    3. About two thirds of the way through the vid I tried to merge the new layer (Layer 12) down onto the 'RustDirt' layer. This is what I would do to keep this material together on one layer with my preferred workflow. You can see the information from Layer 12 disappears when merged down.

I hope this helps to figure out whats going on with these issues. I'll keep posting when these come up and try to be as explicit as possible about whats happening as I know how elusive bug finding can be for coders.

Cheers keep up the good work. :)

  2. Hey gang! Just thought I'd let the Devs know that on the latest version of 3DC (4.8.25 GL64) the transparency issues are still cropping up.

This gif shows a fresh layer having a smart material painted under another layer of thin dark lines. The layer above is somehow affected? The dark lines turn blue.

It may help to know that the previous material I used was not a material as such but just bright blue with the spec/gloss and normal selectors turned off. I guess it remembers that previous blue colour and places it in transparency of the layer above.

I look forward to this getting fixed.  Thanks again for your time. :)

  3. Hey there friends,

I recently had a bit of trouble with this...

A bit of foreshadowing first. Because this asset is going into a game, I want to make two texture states. One with just charcoal for when the fire is out and one with the charcoal and an emissive layer that looks like the logs are on fire.

Because the logs are organic shapes and they can't all be aligned so that the texture runs along them perfectly I have to rotate the material with the smart bar/navigation etc. The problem I am having is that I have to use two smart materials one for the regular charcoal and one for the emissive layer. The problem here is that when I rotate and paint each log with the charcoal texture, the other emisive smart material doesn't rotate as well, so the glowing crcked look doesn't fit into the cracks of the charcoal texture (see image attached)

Is there a mode in the smart bar to link the two materials rotation and transformation? I feel like this has worked for me before but am now doubting myself :P

    Thanks :)

  4. Hey there amigo's

I'm getting intermittent failures with the freeze tool. Here's a link to a youtube vid I made showing how the freeze does not stop the effect of a simple brush, but only sometimes.

So I have a kind of workaround that works for a bit and then doesn't. Basically after what you can see happening in the video occurs, I can create a new scene with a simple vox sphere, then create a sculpt layer and paint with freeze. This seems to reset the tool, I can then go back, reload my scene and the freeze tool works (for a while) then it won't paint at all. I see no dark semi opaque mask and have to repeat the 'new scene' scenario.

  5. Hey there!

Here's a weird issue I have been seeing for some time now.

When a brush doesn't have 100% opacity I get a blend between the smart material and the plain picked foreground colour when painting. This doesn't seem to happen all the time., Just wondering if it's a setting or a bug?

    Thanks again :)

  6. Hey Digman & Carlsoan, thanks for your efforts to help me so far. So after reading what you wrote I see you are getting issues also. I realise this may have slipped under the radar because I am trying to extract layers with transparency to use in a way that most people may not. I will definitely post this thread to support, since it seems to be gaining some traction.

    Cheers ;)

  7. Hey still battling this issue I have made progress though...

    * The problem became apparent to me in 3d coat 4.8.3

    * I updated to 4.8.10 and the problem persisted.

    * I went to a different pc with a fresh install of Windows 7 in our studio and installed 4.5, 4.7 and 4.8

    * Same problem EXCEPT version 4.5 will export with transparency

So is this a version thing or is it the settings in the version?

I really need help here, Carlosan or anyone else can you please help.

  8. Okay I will attach the older smart material, however I don't think that will help because it doesn't work any longer either. Transparency is still functioning in my old documents where the smart material has already been applied, but the same smart material that I used to create that layer now is affected by the same issue.

Here's a graphic and explanation of it as logically as I can explain.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

See attached image: These bright Red, Green and Blue layers are used in our game in conjunction with our custom Unity shader to create custom colours within our game. These may look strange but I assure you this is intentional and is used in our production pipeline.

    (1) Opened an old production document in 3d Coat.

    (2) Clicked 'Edit all Layers in Ext. Editor'

    (3) Hid all layers except the one pertaining to the smart materials in question. Here you can see the transparency clearly, this is working as expected. Please note these materials have not been touched since I used them 3-4 months ago.

    (4) Deleted the green layer and re-filled it with the same smart material I used previously.

    (5) Clicked 'Edit all Layers in Ext. Editor' and hid all the layers that I didn't need to see. You can now clearly see the green layer has lost it's transparency and has fille dit with the white fore3ground colour that 3d Coat has selected currently.

  9. I tried opening an old document where I had done similar work and then exported to photoshop, it worked and retained the transparency. I ten filled the object in the old doc with the same new smart material and got the issue again. Seems like a smart material problem. But.... an old smart material that I used without problem previously also has the trans. issue now too. ?! Super confusing.

  10. Hey Carlosan, Thanks for the prompt reply. :) Yes this is unchecked, tested it and still no alpha/transparency on the layer. I also uninstalled 3d Coat, deleted the prefs files form window>documents, Reinstalled the latest version (4.8.10) Still no luck. I'll try installing on another machine and see what happens.

  11. Hey guys, really need help with this one as it's halting production on my art pipeline.

So as you can see this smart material is very simple. It paints on fine, but when I export the layers it inherits the flat colour from the colour picker as part of the layer. I need the transparency from the green layer to stay intact.

So in other words what I am after is a smart material that fills this pattern with green and no blue in the background just transparency. I've achieved this before with the same setup on a different smart material and now the old smart materials are inheriting the same problems.

    Is this a reinstall situation?

    Please help!

    Thanks, Guats
