  1. I am having issues retopoing anything at all now.

basic shapes like primitives merged together as rudimentary forms are taking forever.

I even tried messing about with a sphere and retopoing. It has created several holes and an unusable mesh (result attached)

The old system was not perfect but it was certainly very quick. I am certain I must be doing something wrong as it used to feel effortless.

  2. I feel exactly the same as Beat!

I backed the Fuel 3D Scanner on Kickstarter so that I (as an artist) can use the data captured to add to my arsenal.

Reference pictures are great, reference videos are great but the level of realism (and un-realism) I will be able to achieve by using, studying, modifying and re-engineering my own scans of faces, hands, ears, feet, plants, rocks, animals, ect is going to be amazing!

I will distribute some of this data to my fellow artists on these forums to use and learn from without having to pay Hollywood premium rates.

There will always be a limit to what a non artist will be able to do with this data in the same way that a non creative photographer will usually produce rubbish pictures.

The invention of camera's did not stop painters...

We are safe... There will always be a need for us artists.

  3. I am really looking forward to the next update too but I am also happy to wait for it.

The Auto-Retopo improvements look so good that it almost makes me feel like waiting until it is here before moving to the next stage with a few of my models.

It is always best to work with what you have though and I find manually retopoing (that a word?) quite therapeutic and relaxing (although quite time consuming)

  4. Right, very rough, first drafty, idea generation...  The Grand Consumers Throne!

It is literally in blocking out form at the moment. Only worked on it for around half an hour so far. All symmetrical at present but this will change imminently.

This will be the throne of an evil hunter king known as Lord Galathatas the Gluton, the Grand Consumer....

Once a fierce warrior and predator, he is very old now and his hunting days are far behind him. He sends out his army of bone pickers to kill the most fearsome beasts and proud warriors. The skin and bones surround his throne. His castle is littered with ghastly trophy's.

He consumes the internal organs and flesh of the victims believing it will extend his life but his frail bloated body is beyond repair.

He still rules with an iron fist as his sheep like followers live in fear of his non-existent supernatural powers.

    Update coming tonight.

  5. Hey Jim,

I did exactly the same. I thought it was worth spending £15 to see what it was all about.

Robert emailed me right back and said it was being still being developed and that he would probably be adding dynamic tessellation in the future.

He seems really friendly and passionate about the project.

Majoro could definitely be a nice little app in the near future.

It will not replace 3D Coat in my pipeline just yet though. It may sit alongside it some day...

  6. For what its worth, I love my Yiynova DP10U tablet and it plays really well with 3D Coat.

It is not ultra mobile like an all in one pressure sensitive tablet PC but it only uses USB for power and video so doesn't need an external power source.

It lives in my laptop bag so I can use it on the go with my Lenovo y580 (as long as it is charged of course).

I still have an old Motion computing Le1600 for 2d work on the go and actually love using my iPad 2 with Procreate and my Hex3 JaJa (which uses high frequency sound to communicate pressure sensitivity rather than bluetooth)

A highly powered pressure sensitive mobile art tablet is like the holy grail. I really hope someone makes one with enough fire in its belly for 3D Coat. I would be interested to hear how you get on Javis.

  7. Hi,

    Here's one I made earlier: http://3d-coat.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=4957&hl=printing

I have also worked on a few other bits using 3D Coat and recently printed some 3d business cards via shapeways (while pushing the minimum wall thickness to the limits).

It really is a pretty awesome tool for creating 3D printable content although it is a good idea to also use (free & opensource) Meshlab http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/ to check / prepare your files.

Netfab is pretty much essential as it does seem to help with accurate measurements and re-sizing. You can even fix holes, make the mesh watertight, etc... There is a free version here: http://www.netfabb.com/downloadcenter.php?basic=1

While I wouldn't call myself an expert, know my way around the process of printing, I have a 3D Scanner on the way http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/45699157/fuel3d-a-handheld-3d-scanner-for-less-than-1000 and I have pre-ordered a copy of Mesh Up http://www.uformia.com/products/mesh-up which looks like it us the perfect suite to prepare meshes for print.

I am also getting a Buccaneer when they are available. I am fast becoming a 3D printing Geek! It is the future!  :)

I didn't see Phil's sculpture before. It is pretty awesome!

  8. I'm much more convinced by this.

It may not look as fancy but the simple fact that you can actualy rest your hands on something and use that surface to get tactile feedback makes all the difference.

That looks pretty cool. I may have to consider backing it!

I might wait this time round though and see what others make of it before taking the plunge.

  9. I have tried the David Laser scanner route and also tried using a Kinect.

The David laser scanner is tricky to set up and a real PITA to get good results from.

The Kinect is too low res and not up to scratch.

Another 3d scanner was released recently called the Matterform which works like a pro version of the David laser scanner but only really scans objects which can fit on its turntable.

I think the real value behind the Fuel 3d is the fact that it is a handheld 3D scanner which produces accurate scans at a usable resolution with just a point and a click. (or several)

If you compare this to the price of other high end handheld scanners I am sure you will see the value in it. The product that inspired the Fuel 3D is being used in the medical profession.

I am sure you will not be convinced anyway as you seem pretty set in your ways once you get a bee in your bonnet. (I do not post much but I have been hanging around these forums since the start.)

I will have to wait until April 2014 before I can really add any meat to the bones of this discussion so I will let you know how it performs then.

BTW Beat, you were right about Silo. It crashed on me when I tried to open a mesh in it this morning. The mesh opened fine in Blender and Carrara...

  10. The output is so much better than 123D Catch.

I think you may have missed something.... either that or you are just trying to find something else to crap on.

If the fact that I will be able to scan absolutely anything, import the meshes (which will be a actual high resolution meshes complete with real surface details not just a rough blocky shape with a texturemap) merge, sculpt, then retopo or export for print doesn't add value to my workflow then I must be deluded or a complete idiot for spending my hard earned cash on such a device.

  11. Hey Guys,

I have just backed an awesome project on Kickstarter and was luck enough to get one of the limited $750 beta units!

I am very excited about getting my Fuel 3D and thought I would make you lot aware of it. On release it will be $1500 so I have picked up a bargain!

You can still get one for $990 and it will be a production ready version.

    http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/45699157/fuel3d-a-handheld-3d-scanner-for-less-than-1000

This is going to be awesome!

    :D
