Thanks for this suggestion; that helped. Although for me, and for future reference and anyone else who has the same thing happen, I had to select Clear Seams afterwards. If the seams turn red for some reason, I believe you need to click on Clear Sharp...?

A shame no one replied to this. BUT. I managed to figure out what the problem was - my mistake was not adding an X-Form in Max, or freezing the transformations in Maya before exporting.

Never mind. Figured out it was because Auto Snap wasn't enabled. ^^
