  1. I just used the magic wand tool in 3DCoat on my current model which has a Mask layer that contains a multi-coloured texture with all my component parts. Firstly, the tool is VERY VERY slow; literally the program froze for about a minute and a half while attempting the operation. I have a model with 7 Materials applied each at 4096x4096. Unfreezing takes just as long to perform. It's a far from ideal situation and I've discovered that sending all layers to Photoshop and doing a mask selection and filling a layer with flat colour is a far quicker operation. Anyone else experiencing this or had problems with the Magic Wand tool in 3DCoat? I'm not sure if it even has a contiguous/non-contiguous setting. Any help/advice appreciated.
  2. Thanks for the response Denis. If I'm honest this isn't a satisfactory workaround (no offense intended) I have found a suitable HDRi that gives a neutral, flats-ish look with directional light in the viewport. It doesn't bloom out when blurred so it's probably my personal solution for now until/if Andrew addresses this. cheers
  3. Guys is there a way to fade out the Environment map opacity from the viewport similar to Substance Painter as seen here? : https://youtu.be/xWdc4VS48a4?t=3m59s I do know about the ability to blur the Environment Map but depending on the map the results can be somewhat of a strain on the eyes.
  4. Please use NVil as inspiration for poly modelling, or better yet just hire Kun (Istonia) to make it for you. He's amazing and about as prolific as Andrew when it comes to iterating. http://voidworld.cmcproductions.co.uk/index.php
  5. Thanks, this is very pertinent to our profession. Any particular reason you have posted this today?
  6. Brilliant, that worked a treat It's a bit of a hack until Andrew gets round to this but works perfectly. //admin edit Andrew (administrator) 2015-07-06 04:44 fixed in 4.5.05
  7. haha, no that's perfect, and thanks for reporting the bug. This will make the Smart Materials more powerful I think. Also having sliders for each individual channel would be preferable as an addendum to this bug report. This way you can have a modifier for each channel to fine tune.
  8. Ok we have just tried this on multiple versions (mine being V4.5.02) Unchecking these boxes does not actually switch them off but merely hides them from the user. Any idea why you would want to do this? It makes more sense that if you turn them off you don't not want these parameters to affect the layer.
  9. No warning for me but I don't use Avast. false positive maybe?
  10. ajz3d, thank you so much for this response. Yes this is what we were looking for (maybe got confused that there wasn't an actual slider like there is for Depth) In fact maybe having a percentage slider would be a useful thing per layer parameter so you can adjust how much the colour will be affected. anyway this solves our problem so thanks again.
  11. Hello all, loving 3DCoat's new Smart (PBR) Materials but we have stumbled across a scenario where we needed to make a new Layer that would change the Depth, Roughness, Metalness only but not add any Colour. Is this possible. If not I think we'll need to add a suggestion to include an opacity slider (parameter) to the colour slot. thanks.
  12. I'm amazed at how small the file sizes are compared to any other method that I've tried for creating animated gifs. Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention. I believe that small animated gifs are perfect for illustrating specific functions or bug fixing for developers. I used them a lot when helping Istonia develop NVil (aka Voidworld) for example :
  13. I personally feel that this is one of the worst suggestions I've read on this forum. There are SO many things that should be done to fix and make better the tools that already exist in 3DCoat that the list would stretch from here to the moon and back. Too long to post on this thread that's for sure. I would hate to see 3DCoat watered down even more than it is. The Voxel room has taken up FAR too much of Andrew's time and as a result other aspects of this app have been neglected. Please Andrew never implement character animation tools.
  14. Here's an idea; instead of hankering after the past why not collaborate to help design a lighting system that is both better and more robust than old & current 3dcoat Lighting. If we had both HDR lighting and directional at the same time, with their own sets of controls for position/rotation and exposure, this would be the ideal situation. Think of it this way; you could use a very diffuse or overcast HDRi for your fill light and your directional to pick out the forms of your object. I have to admit that I've finished my first asset for our current project using the latest 4.5 Beta (Yes I tested it thoroughly before deciding to use it in production) I have a couple of Studio Setup HDRi that give a strong directional light while also providing a little fill light. It feels like switching between the old 'Full lit' & 'half Lambert' modes but within the same lighting system. I set the exposure of the light to match our engine and after exporting the Roughness, Metalness & Albedo textures to the Engine I literally had to do zero Photoshoppery for fix up. It really was WYSIWYG between 3DCoat and Unreal Engine 4. Working so 'on target' is fantastic and REALLY saves time. Hopefully we can reach a consensus on the most versatile Lighting System for 3DC. I believe what I have proposed here is very similar to what exists in Substance Painter already, or even closer to home with the Render Room in 3DC. ..anyway, here's to constructive criticisms
  15. http://3d-coat.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=5739 Just import and use a Studio Lighting HDRi; problem solved.
  16. Another bug in Beta 18. 'More on Flat' Mode works in the Preview window but not when you paint.
  17. Fantastic work. seems to work a treat. Would be great to see it on even more complex open shapes.
  18. Thanks Michaelgdrs, I really hope that one day this happens. Even though I've moved on from Environments to Character artwork in my day job; I would still find this tool indispensable for personal projects. A kind request to anyone who posted in this thread, please head over to Trello and sign up if you haven't already to vote this idea up. the more votes the more likely Andrew will take notice. https://trello.com/c/37EvLBhs/188-sandbox-tiler-fill-with-voxels To Andrew, if you happen to read this again, I would love if you emailed me if you decide to work on this again. I have a few more ideas that might improve the workflow. Thanks.
  19. Yes, something like this Glossiness/Roughness should be separate channel to Metalness. The 3 things are not synonymous.
  20. Not yet, but I believe Andrew mentioned about separating the two things at some point.
  21. Hi Vipera, sorry for late reply. I've been stupidly busy lately. Are you talking about Stencils? When you say: Do your channel controls look like this I can import stencils fine and paint on all or any combination of bump, spec or diffuse.
  22. Allow me to point you in the general direction of a thread I started 5 years 9 months and 18 days ago; entitled 'Sandbox Tiling Engine'. http://3d-coat.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=2987 I guess Andrew had bigger fish to fry but I reckon this tool would rise 3DCoat heads above other applications. If you like the idea, please support it because even after all this time we would still REALLY find this tool useful in our studio (and many studios around the world I bet)
  23. Nice to see another Nvil user, great work with the render. How did the material setup compare to 3DCoat? Did you find that you needed to tweak the exported materials to get them to work?
