Getting Malware from a thread at 3DC forum..
Nossgrr replied to Nossgrr's topic in CG & Hardware Discussion
I used to run NOD32 a while back. Mad props for being written in Assembly Language! Now this one might surprise you, it's an old dog too :) -
Not sure where to post this so feel free to relocate the post... Every time I hit the following link on 3DC forums I get a malware attack attempt that gets intercepted by AVG.. If I reboot my system and hit that page with Chrome, I get that pop up about 3 out of 5 times.. Needless to say, dont hit that page unless you have some sort of web shield enabled but should probably be addressed.

Was browsing my Pluralsight subscription this morning and noticed this course.. It's part of a multi application pipeline training using ZB, Marmoset, 3DC. The first few chapters are using 3DCoat for Retopo, UVs.. Will add it to my watch list and get back to you(s). Modeling and Texturing Animals for Games

Houdini 17 Direct Modeling Sneak Peek..
Nossgrr replied to Nossgrr's topic in CG & Hardware Discussion
This plugin is really interesting! Even with the release of H17 direct modeling tools, this might be a good addition. In the second video it reminds me a lot about the Decal Machine addon for Blender but more powerful.. GJ! -
Houdini 17 Direct Modeling Sneak Peek..
Nossgrr replied to Nossgrr's topic in CG & Hardware Discussion
I gotta say 2.8 will be hard on me.. I played with the Alpha and my 2.79 muscle memory betrays me. lol.. I'm sure once I get used to it I wont look back.. I hope most of my addons will get updated to 2.8 also.. As for learning Houdini, it's definitely a different beast and I dont think everything translates well to it, but the things it's meant for are really awesome! -
Really excited about this if they come out with a good set of direct modeling tools in Houdini 17.

Ancient Regime, Have you tried Fusion 360 yet? It was made for creating shapes like that and is free to boot... Just install the "Trial", expires every year so you need to re-activate once per year.

$650 for a 64 CORE 4 CPU monster for Blender
Nossgrr replied to L'Ancien Regime's topic in CG & Hardware Discussion
Had the same opportunity at work.. I.T. decommissioned our data-center for new hardware and were basically giving away our old 2u servers (pizza boxes), took a look at the hardware and counted about 36 fans, quad xeons, redundant power supp, custom power connector..etc.. And I went, nope, pass.. The power requirements was insane. lol Some of the IT guys picked some up and had to install dedicated power outlets at their houses to accommodate the connectors and amperage.. They're crazy. lol -

This one's been out for while, bought it when it came out... Good course. -
It's definitely a tough time to upgrade because of the situation you mentioned with crypto miners, in my case I have a GTX 1070 and it can handle pretty much anything I throw at it. In a pinch, I've seen some good numbers come out of the GTX1060, that's the lowest specced card I would consider, it would still be a good upgrade from your 760.

Very cool! Here's a demo of it in action..

Kernel-memory-leaking Intel processor design flaw
Nossgrr replied to ajz3d's topic in CG & Hardware Discussion
Hi Mr. Panka, That's the thing, they need to exploit your computer first to gain access.. So in the case you mentioned, they would need to run an exploit (non meltdown related) to gain access to your system and memory.. Only then could they access the cpu prediction bug. The more scary aspect of this is with hosted companies.. You could technically rent hosted space and then from there, access the Host Server's memory to spy on other tenants on the server. That's how all cloud companies operate so you see how this can be a huge deal there.. Also bear in mind that the information you get is totally random, there's no way to predict what the HOST CPU prediction branches will discard. -
Kernel-memory-leaking Intel processor design flaw
Nossgrr replied to ajz3d's topic in CG & Hardware Discussion
I dont agree about the update being shoved down our throats.. It doesnt have much of an impact security wise for regular users.. Malware has to been installed on the PC or someone have local access to it in order to exploit the flaws.. At which point they're already in your system. Same goes for companies with local data centers (ie: non shared hardware).. I think it should be up to us to decide if we want this update.. a possible 30% is a big deal for our data center.. Most servers are already fined tuned and dont have much headroom.. Could cause major outages and costs. As for my local workstation? Leave my CPU cycles alone and keep your patch! Anyways, that's my opinion on this whole mess.. -
Dramatic improvements in bootable drives have arrived
Nossgrr replied to L'Ancien Regime's topic in CG & Hardware Discussion
A friend of mine has one and said he cold boots Windows 10 under 2.5 secs with the M.2.. <- It's on my wishlist for my next rig. The same specs but 512GB is $360.00 CDN ($282.00 USD), all apps on C:, rest on regular 1 TB SSDs D: and I'm in business! He did mention you needed to have a 4x lane to get the full speeds. -
It's definitely a different animal, a hybrid between creation thinking and technical thinking. I have a few tutorial series lined up for 16.5, cant wait to dig in.

And it's out, ready for download, Houdini What's new in 16.5 Houdini 16.5 Download
