  1. Hi All, This is part two of how to build quick and easy terrains in 3D Coat. I go over working with higher quality Height Fields (4k) along with using adjustment layers to balance out specific areas or features that are added to the terrain design. Cheers.
  2. Hi Friends, I made a quick video walkthrough of the new Tree Generator tool, and thought I'd share it here.
  3. Hi All, Here's a short video of some interesting uses with the new Voxel or Volumetric Painting tools. Hope you like it.
  4. Hi All, I've finally got around to playing with the volumetric painting feature. It's really incredible and can't wait to see this evolve. Anyway, I know there have been some videos already shared, but I thought I would share yet another video. Cheers! Also, I wanted to give a shout out to @Silas Merlin who has helped inspire me with his videos as well.
  5. hello, I'm new to 3DCoat and trying to learn this software. I'm following a tutorial for voxel sculpting. Each time I try to make a shape using sphere voxel tool, the shape has a weird angle, if I increase the depth of the brush the angle is greater the same is the case when I cut through the shape. Why is this happening and how can I solve this?
  6. Tiling Engine 'Sandbox Tiler' - Fill with Voxels ***Please support this idea on Trello*** I have had this idea of a system whereby we can create easily Tiling textures using Voxels ever since Andrew started working on the Alpha for V3. The easiest things to compare it to are Zbrush's Tiling Canvas or Corel's Painter Pattern making function where you paint and your brush will go off the edge of the canvas and wrap around to the opposite side. Therefore creating easily tiling textures without worry. The difference here being that you are using actual voxel geometry in 3DC instead of on just a 2D canvas. I mocked up 3 images using Silo & photoshop to help demonstrate what I mean by this. It should work in theory very much like the Tiling Grid from the start up screen if you've ever used it. Advantages for using Geometry instead of painting bump (the two can be used in conjunction - paint high detail bump at the end of the process) -You can get a much nicer normal map that works better with game lighting engines. -You can extract an exact tiling 32Bit Displacement map for high resolution rendering. -Visualising the placement of objects in 3d space (e.g. overlapping bricks, grout, moss in cracks on different layers etc.) -works with Merge Tool -works with all Tools & Brushes -exactly replicates states of point cloud & surface that wrap around at the extents of the sandbox. Let me know what you think as I can imagine this would be of a lot of use to artists creating Tiling textures for games/film. p.s. Just realised how 'Tomorrow's World' this request is. Maybe by 3DC V4 or V5
  7. I would like to ask if there would be a way to use the Freeze (mask) in Voxels Mode in the Sculpt Room. I know that Freeze is used in the Pose Tool, Vox Extrude, Vox Layer ... Is it possible to use the Freeze with the Move Brush and the other sculpting Brushes in Voxels mode? Or some masking technique for sculpting tools on Voxels? Thank you
  8. Hello! I'm trying to fill the voids inside the voxels but I get this result - http://take.ms/HW16j Why do not the voids fill in?
  9. Hi, I'm just getting started with 3d Coat. I have been sculpting in Voxels and get a problem with some tools. "Build" and "Scrape" tools stop working although I'm moving the brush. What can be wrong?
  10. I am struggling to find out how to make alphas for my brushes for use when sculpting in the Voxel room. I have seen an old tutorial by Javis but I don't know if this still applies. He basically shows that alphas are made of 4 layers 'Color', 'HeightMap', 'Specular' and 'EraserMask'. Does this still apply? My last question is, where do I save my alphas once I have made them in Photoshop? I see in 'My Documents' there is 2 folders '3D-CoatV3' and '3D-CoatV45'. Inside '3D-CoatV3' there is only one folder called 'Exchange'. Inside '3D-CoatV45' there is a bunch of folders. I don't know which one I should save my brush alphas to. I would like to make my own folder so I can differentiate the standard brushes from my own custom brushes. Is there a way to do this and if so where would I place that folder with the alpha files. Thanks!

  12. Hi, I have a model that I created in the voxel room with multiple layers and imported it into the UV room, but it's only showing one single texture ID on the top left drop down menu (see 'the issue' attachment). I used the 'auto-mapping' option when importing the model for per-pixel painting. I feel like I am doing something wrong with UV mapping. This is my workflow: 1. Create a high poly model in voxel room 2. Model has multiple layers (I.e. head, face, back, arms) 3. Export the model by going to File > export > export scene > save as OBJ 4. Import model > Import model for Per Pixel Painting (which takes me to the Paint room) -- see 'import' attachment) attachment 5. I then click on the 'UV' tab to go to UV room. And this is where is only shows 'back' as a UV set. But on the right where it says 'surface materials', it shows all the layers that were in the original Voxel room. Now when I export the model as an FBX and open it in Substance Painter, it shows all of my texture ID's (see 'substance' attachment) that were previously layers in the voxel room. However, 3D coat does not display this in the paint room when I import that FBX file back into 3D coat. I need to be able to apply the textures I did from substance painter to specific texture ID's in 3D coat (like head, arm, legs, etc) I think I am doing the UV mapping incorrectly in 3D coat to begin with. But why does it work everywhere else?

  14. There is a bug affecting every model I create. It's really inconsistent. Sometimes when I undo or smooth, or turn symmetry off, it corrupts my mesh and is irreparable. It basically causes he mesh to have zero width on some part of it. I can't even undo to reverse the changes and hope to god that I have saved a recent backup. See attachment to view what happens. Notice the top part of the model's head that looks like its see through and pixelated almost.
  15. Hi, I am trying out a few new tools after checking out a sweet tutorial on Udemy for hard surface sculpting, I found out about a few tools that I never even knew about! Right now I am messing around with creating clothing and I am using the 'Vox Layer' tool to make things like sweaters and trousers (generic items of clothing) but I am running into some problems which are by the sounds of it pretty common when working with voxels. I apply my new Vox Layer and its relatively thin, I start sculpting creases and moving around the volume to get my forms but when I start getting into the detailing (I usually sculpt in Surface mode for this) I am completely destroying my volume. I know I can make the volume thicker before applying my Vox Layer but I don't really want massively thick trousers and sweaters, is there any other way to non destructively sculpt on thin volumes? If there isn't which I don't expect there is, then I guess the only answer is to make my Vox Layer relatively thick. Just a thought, can you freeze the inner shell of a new Vox Layer and sculpt on the outer surface of it, with the inside of the volume frozen could that potentially stop the issue of sculpting through the whole volume if it is really thin? Just want to add, Split and Vox Layer with the different selection modes are my favorite tools right now, you can make some sick stuff, if anyone is interested in the Udemy course I mentioned above here is the link https://www.udemy.com/3d-coat-robots 3D - Coat totally kills Zbrush for complex hard surface and organic modelling! GO 3D - COAT!!!! XD
  16. I am looking for a little bit of help. I am working with a model which I have instanced a ton of times (roughly 119 million triangles) and I am looking to retopo my model, but performance in the viewport is starting to feel a little sluggish. Is there any tips on how I can improve performance when not sculpting and just doing retopo or UV work? I have everything CUDA on at the moment and my GPU is a GTX 970 which has about 4GB of RAM and I have 16GB of RAM currently inside my PC. Don't know if you need all that info but hey Thanks, Dave.
  17. I thought I would share my work and start off a little sketchbook of what I am creating. Some renders will be from 3D - Coat and some will be from UE4. Right now I am working on a stone wall for a game idea. I've sculpted my stones, next step will be to make some grout to go between them and then retopologize, UV and bake. Eventually this will be going into UE4. I'll keep updating this thread as I progress

  19. I downgraded a voxels layer and then merged a load of objects into the layer. When i click the button to restore the downgraded volume, all the objects i placed/merged into the layer are gone, while any changes to the original mesh of that layer are kept. Is there a way round this?
  22. http://www.openvdb.org/ Hi just wondering if 3dcoat voxels could work with this. i just found we could sculpt splashes or whatever animating over time and this file format would be useful. im a noob but it looks promising. Sure Andrew has better to do,any way i would like your opinions!
  23. Hi there, I just bought 3D Coat through Steam these days and I'm loving the software. I'm a ZBrush user and I'm fairly impressed with all features that 3D Coat has to offer. But I have a question regarding performance, while I'm playing around with voxels. When I increase the resolution to 4X it's a little difficult to use the move tool to deform the mesh, while some other bruses appears to work ok (so far). Even at 16x on surface mode (just a bit) isn't so slow as 4x on voxel mode. I'm using the 3D Coat 64 bit Direct X version. My rig: i7 3.8ghz 16gb ddr3 hd 7970 OC Also, when I increase the density through VoxTree, the mesh changes its scale. How does it interfere in textures and maps when exporting to other softwares? Thanks!
  24. From the album: Phil Nolan's work

I recently made this short animation which required sculpting a coffee bean in 3D-Coat, then auto-retopoing and bringing it into LightWave where it was instanced many times to make the "floor" of the scene. This was Episode 7 of my series, jWords, where each epoisode teaches a few Japanese words.
