Tony's right!

Specifically, though, use the lasso tool to hide the parts you don't want. I just did this yesterday to retopo inside the lips of a character, and it works like a charm. BUT...

You need to be careful not to retopo over the part that has been hidden. Just thought I'd mention it. :)

Is there a way to hide parts of your retopologized geo in the Retopo room?

A tool to hide retopo mesh polygons of a layer would be very handy, instead of selecting faces to hide, moving them to a new layer and hiding that layer. Something like painting over faces you want to hide perhaps?

Also, I don't know if it's only me, but on both cards: 9800GTX and 660Ti the Near Plane Modulator setting doesn't have impact on near faces display distance. It simply affects nothing. And having this properly working would really help in retopologising deep holes like mouth, eye sockets, and working with very small details on uneven surface (voxel volume hiding aside).

i use at Retopo Room

Basic: Select

e-panel: paint with drawn contour

Commands: Hide

Hide: Store Hidden state

If your model is in Surface mode

Hide: activate Hide Tool

At paint room you can make some face invisible, and switch back to retopo room
