Freeze based on UV patches

This is how to do it:

1. In the Paint Room Layers panel, hide all of your layers except for Layer 0. That is because there should be no paint, depth, or specularity information on Layer 0.

(You can ALT-click on the eyeball icon on Layer 0 to do this quickly.)

(If you did accidentally paint on Layer 0, then create a new layer and fill that layer with a single color. To fill that new layer quickly, you can use the Fill Tool, and choose "Layer". Then hide all other layers except for that newly created layer.)

2. Go to the Textures menu at the top of the screen (still in the Paint Room). Click on "Texture UV Editor".

You will see the UVs for your model appear in the "Texture editor" panel.

3. Select the Magic Wand tool.

4. Use the Magic Wand tool to click on a UV Island (you are calling them UV patches). You will see that the UV island (UV patch) is now completely frozen.

5. Repeat step 4 until you have frozen everything you want.
