Tri to Quad Conversion (free beta for OBJ files)

Hi,
new meshing software for conversion of triangular mesh into quadrilateral (or quad-dominant) is available for free on www.topologica.org
ArtMesh application is at the stage of beta testing now. Software uses another approach than RETOPO or similar. Resulting mesh's topology is not as good as after RETOPO but all hard edges are saved in mesh.
OBJ files are used for input/output. Edges with splitted normals and edges between different groups and textures are saved after remeshing.
The remesher was initially developed for engineering applications, so for some models result will be a bit unexpected.
Images with input discrete geometry and resulting quad mesh are attached to the post.

I am one of the developers of ArtMesh and I will try to answer any questions ...
Thanks

That is pretty cool ! B)

If I decimate a huge mesh it is always a messy triangle mesh
With your artmesh I get a nicer quadmesh then.

Maybe give your  baby a little GUI for more comfort :D

Yes, without GUI it looks like old style software.

ArtMesh was developed as a meshing component for other programs with GUI.

Later it may be wrapped in plugin or something similar that is more convenient to use.

Ok just test it with a couple ... maybe more 3d models.

1) It always gets the poly higher

2) It gives a dissent outcome but its too dense.

At some points it makes some crazy tris and the comes to quads again.

3) At some point it will need a simple gui

Overall i am interested and salute you for the work, what is going to be the final price?

Also can you share a bit of info on the parameters?

chords_per_circle=18
aspect_ratio=3.0e0
meshing_file method=quad in="Horse.obj" out="Horse.quad.obj" h=50.0 use_subdivide=1

Software is not good for low poly. That is true.
Artmesh tries to carry all irregularities of initial surface (undulations and so on) on quad surface.
May be pre-smoothing of the model make mesh sparser.
You can try to set a small value for chords_per_circle. For example chords_per_circle=0 or small not-zero: chords_per_circle=6.

I am not sure that I can say what will be the price.
I think a trial version will available for a long time.
You can send your suggestions to artmesh@topologica.org.

Thank you for the explanation , i must disagree though on one thing , it will make a great low poly quad with some tweaks ;)  , after all , going  to quad from polys is usually after a re topology or mesh reduction.

I will try to test more and send solid suggestions when possible.

Thank you for this great tool.

these parameters are explained in the manual.

Link to the manual at the main page of topologica.org: http://www.topologica.org/toplog/wp/files/153/

I have added manual to zip files with application (both win32 and win64). It was necessary to do it earlier.

Some models (initial_tri and resulting_quad) may be posted in topologica.org gallery.

"About" file with model author/owner and your comments may be added below the image.
Send please your models to artmesh@topologica.org

Too bad , all models i tested so far are under NDA and some of them are easily recognizable as they are from commercial games.

Will there be a Linux version?  Also will this be integrated into 3D-Coat at some point?  Thanks, and it's looking good.   :)

Some time ago artmesh.dll has a linux version. It may be restored if it will be a demand. If we will do it I send you a message.

Integration with 3D-Coat ... ArtMesh team has not any objections to integrating with 3D-Coat. If/when ArtMesh will be good enough for it.
