Hairy Creature.

A common product output in the CG world with large investment in developer time and effort in the production of hair/fur systems. But does the algorithm control the art or can artists produce great "hairy" work without vast computational tools? Lets find out.

Rules:

1. Model a hairy creature (any type and style: real or imagined) and paint (any method) in 3D Coat. Hair effect generated by real geometry or paint. Image texturing acceptable from other software (photoshop, etc.) as part of Paint Room processing but should not be used to post process a final render for more or less hair effect.

2. Render in outside renderer if desired but do not use outside particle system or instancing system to produce hair effect.

3. Post WIP early and often. Mark final render or final screen shot as "Final Version".

4. Challenge begins: 16.08.2015, deadline: 23:59, 26.09.2015

Enjoy.

BK

Looks great Michaelgdrs. I was getting concerned that no one was going to try.

Looking forward to seeing your project progress. Are you going to pair that hairless rat with a Sphynx cat?

Working on 3 different variations , a hairless with some hair on the face etc  , a full hair one , and a full scene with props and Houdini hair with Mantra renderer....

Cant decide with which one i shall continue as work is pressing me a lot.

Sphynx cat , good one , i may try this one as well.  :p:

Here is a start to one of my favorite animals.

I may attempt this in ZBrush fibermesh to compare.

Thanks Michael, I like what is going on with your rat too. Your results are much more refined. For this exercize I am going to try to see if I can get some spontaneity out of the program and try not to sweat too many details.

That being said, I may be going down a bad path here with some grass forms in the scene but am curious how to handle some more complexity and texture. That is what I like about 3DC, pretty easy just to fool around.

By the way , a tip if you need it , i always do the details on the normal map after the Retopo.

It keeps everything cleaner (topology) and it doesn't deform the model at all.

Try it on your fur.

P.S

Is there someone else taking part on the competition or we have a little battle going on here lol

My latest work is a redwood tree with 'armatures' covered with hair objects for individual fronds. There are too many for actual geometry, When I start on some heads, I will try to use the lessons learned here in this challenge to enhance the appearance of the hair.

Thanks for the tip Michael. I am not sure how to deal with the fur at this point, but was hoping to fake it some with paint. Might be possible to do that with the grass too I suppose. Since I am not making a real object with this I should learn to take advantage of paint techniques.

I hope someone else takes interest and gives it a go. Otherwise I will recommend you as the default winner.

Is that a 2K or 4K map? Seems convincing to me.

Last couple years we work a lot with low poly models for game engines (In Elance) so we got a bit familiar with the procedures.

I wish i could afford pro version earlier.

We used it in 7 projects so far all with excellent results.
