Selecting / grouping polys to paint?

Another noob q!

I tried the "E-Panel" to be able to paint specific polygons on the included robot model.

However, I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to select multiple polygons and save them to a group.

For example, the "swiss cheese" armor on the back of the robot's hands - I'd like to carefully select and group all the polys and then paint it, rather than carefully painting one poly at a time.

Also, I'd like to be able to go back later to one of these groups to continue with weathering, etc.

I know this may be a basic thing but I couldn't find a reference to doing it, and am not sure what it's called (if it's available!)

thanks,

Andrew
