Object imported as lots of sub objects - why?

I've imported a model sculpted in Zbrush - it has been dynameshed before export to get a single continuous mesh (and just in case I checked it in Modo - it looks correct there, no sub pieces etc). But when I open it in 3D Coat (surface sculpting) I get crazy amount of sub parts (layers) in the tree (import w/o voxelization - with voxelization it takes forever to open). Any ideas what's going on?

that's mu guess too polyxo. But I wonder how those get transferred via OBJ? And more importantly howto get rid of them when opening file in 3DC?

At this point I simply went through and reexported within Modo (at home don't have access to Zbrush), but it would be great to avoid this extra step.

First, if you exported an obj file from Zbrush... open the obj file in notepad,it really is just a text file. You will not see the obj file listed till  you select "all files" in the drop down list. Do you see more than one object in the obj file. If true, that is why 3DC is creating sub object layers.

I am not sure why it is taking so long to load the file in voxel mode, no picture of your import panel, so how much voxel resolution is it upon import?

The amount of voxels (polycount) is in the import panel... Shown in the attached image.

The polycount / voxel resolution is accurate for voxel mode but not surface mode which imports your model as is except it triangulates the object.

If the polycount / voxel resolution is too high then reduce to what you need just to capture your details by scaling the model using the translate gizmo.

Press enter to apply and select "Yes" to keep the original scale of the model for exporting purposes.

Note: Be sure not to have "Import as child" selected in the import panel, otherwise you will get the sub objects again in voxel mode.

A Tip for surface mode.

The sub objects in surface mode can be merged to the parent voxel layer. Right click the voxel parent layer and select merge subtree. This will merge all the children layers to a voxel layer and the surface mode layers will be deleted. Whether this will give you enough voxel resolution for your details you will have to test.

Obj supports groups of all sorts. You can tell Zbrush to get rid of them in the Tool/Geometry/Export - Panel.

Try that and see how it goes.
