Carlosan
http://aws.amazon.com/lumberyard/ http://aws.amazon.com/de/lumberyard/faq/Q. Is Lumberyard based on CryEngine?Lumberyard is made up of proven technology from CryEngine, AWS, Twitch, and Double Helix. We’ve hired some of the best game technologists in the world, who have already made over 41 pages of additions, fixes, and improvements to Lumberyard. For example, we’ve integrated a brand new networking layer, GridMate, so your engineers can more easily build low-latency, high-player count, multiplayer games. We’ve also created a new launcher and project configurator so your team can get set up without engineering help. We’ve also created new workflows so your artists can iterate faster and create higher-quality content, including a new particle editor, 2D/UI tool, and cross-platform asset pipeline. Please see our full release notes of additions, fixes, and improvements to learn more, and tune in to our GameDev Blog for more news on what we are working on. Member Sable0411 Posted February 10, 2016 Member Share Posted February 10, 2016 This is something. I'm going to tinker around with it tomorrow, see how it's set up. Does anyone know what all it's compatible with yet? There is information on importing from Maya and 3DS Max, but not any other programs. PolyHertz
I haven't used it, but from what I've read it's just like Cryengine in that it requires plugins which are only available for Max/Maya. Member Sable0411 Posted February 10, 2016 Member Share Posted February 10, 2016 Yeah seems that way. And as I right now am learning and prefer Houdini, basically makes this completely useless to me. Not to mention, I did set it up last night, and really didn't like it. For one, the install process is really obtuse, not to mention lacking a true installer in the first place, it installs when you extract it, which is kind of weird. Then loading it was a bit counterintuitive, with having to manually activate a number of features you even want available, including the editor, and starting the editor the first time took forever, though it did go faster on subsequent attempts. But messing around with Ghepetto, which is their system for importing and setting up characters with skeletons, yeah it is highly limited. New Member zeenwa Posted August 28, 2016 New Member Share Posted August 28, 2016 This does look pretty good, has anyone around here made any good games with it? I'm wondering why I shouldn't just use the cryengine?
Advanced Member Nossgrr Posted August 28, 2016 Advanced Member Share Posted August 28, 2016 Depends what you want to do, Lumberyard added tight integration with their cloud services, so if multiplayer games is your target then it might be worth looking into. At the core, they're both using Cryengine up until pre-version 5. What I like about Cry\Lumber is everything looks pretty damn good out of the box and the price.. What I dont like about them is the dreaded art pipeline, you pretty much need Max or Maya + photoshop to get your assets in pain free.. They've both started implementing a .FBX importer but it's far from ready.. It does mostly static meshes and most of them are hit and miss.. As an indie company, I cant add Max\Maya licenses, it's just not possible money wise. So until that is addressed, it's UE4 or Unity3D \ Modo Indie for me. Member Percevan Posted August 28, 2016 Member Share Posted August 28, 2016 Lumberyard is a fork from CryEngine 3.8.xxx , so it's lacking a lot of the development CryDev brought in their most recent versions. And Amazon didn't bought the "right" to benefit from any upcoming CryEngine development. On the other hand, it has a relatively decent update rhythm, not very fast but... okayish, which can even bring a couple of features not yet present in CryEngine V. For example, even though I didn't dig deep into it when I briefly tried it, Lumberyard has a component approach not unlike Unity, which might help new users and speedup things... maybe. Personally, I still prefer CryEngine, but to each its own I don't have issues exporting models from maya to CryEngine V (didn't try with Lumberyard) even though, granted, you have to be careful as the whole process involves a bit more preparatory steps that I like, so the user has to be methodical and... not in a rush :). Advanced Member Nossgrr Posted August 29, 2016 Advanced Member Share Posted August 29, 2016 Well how about that timing... Turns out CryEngine 5.2 made good headway on .FBX Static and Animation Import.. Posted 3 days ago for the 5.2 release. Looks like a solid release too.
