Member ab3d Posted March 13, 2016 Member Report Share Posted March 13, 2016 I am looking to project 16 bit textures on to a model and wondering if it paints in 16bit or does the import reduce it to 8bit? I tried searching but the only topic i could find was 6 years old and im not sure if has been resolved by then. Id rather not have to use mari for this. Thanks. Moderator Daniel Posted March 14, 2016 Moderator Report Share Posted March 14, 2016 Yes, it will keep 16 bits
Reputable Contributor AbnRanger Posted March 14, 2016 Reputable Contributor Report Share Posted March 14, 2016 Yes, it will keep 16 bits I don't think 3D Coat paints in 16bit color. I asked Andrew about this and he said it was only 8bit. It can output output 32bit displacement maps in EXR or TIFF, but otherwise 3D Coat works only in 8bit color depth
Member ab3d Posted March 14, 2016 Author Member Report Share Posted March 14, 2016 Ok so who do i believe. Also, if it does retain 16 bit depth, is that still true used with projection via Photoshop? Again this is something mari does with little effort but since i have a 3dc license i thought why not ask. Very critical question though. Very critical question though. Just export a color map from and open it in PS. You'll see that it's 8bit depth, and there is no current option to paint in 3D Coat in 16bit color depth, as far as I know.
Solution Andrew Shpagin Posted March 14, 2016 Solution Report Share Posted March 14, 2016 3D-Coat will not export 16 bit color. But 16 bit alphas are good for bump and displacement. So, alpha will keep 16 bits but it is applicable mostly for displacement.
Member ab3d Posted March 14, 2016 Author Member Report Share Posted March 14, 2016 (edited) That's cool about the alphas but I need to project 16 bit images onto the model, but no worries. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Edited March 14, 2016 by ab3d
