Hello,

I  made a discord server for 3D-Coat users to help share tips and get feedback in a live-chat environment.

Please feel free to join if you want to.
3DCoat https://discord.gg/kAFmapsx

Alternatively if you don't want to grow a community on discord you could always join the 5000+ strong users on Game Development League.

This forum works just fine; the forum is easy to search, it's easy to track new posts, and most important of all -- everything is archived.

So, how does Discord compare to the forums?

- Discussions are not archived and not searchable?
- The same questions and answer need to be repeated all the time?
- Previous answers cannot be found?
- Information gets losts?
- Supports embedded Video and Images?

I have very limited experience with Discord, but from what I can gather, using Discord would seem more like a distraction from doing actual work. (Which is not to say that Discord cannot be used productively, I'm sure it can. But in this case, as a support solution, I think there is nothing better than the forums.)

My opinion is, that diversification of the 3D-Coat community, by introducing additional third-party supported "gathering places" (voice/text chat) will move talent and information away from the main community (which is the 3D-Coat Forums).

There is, of course, already a 3D-Coat Facebook community and Andrew has a Twitter account. Those channels are used mostly for news/marketing, and I do not see them as competing with the Forums.

Lastly, instead of embracing this Discord idea, I (personally) will have to reject it, because I would not have time to be on Discord.

This is, of course, something that everyone will have to evaluate for themselves, I do not speak for others.

Also, please correct me if I'm wrong.

This feature comparison page is equally useful:
https://discordapp.com/features

By their nature, these types of voice/text-chat systems are better suited for one-off realtime conversations, than for ongoing threaded discussion with persistent storage and content search.

As an anecdote, around 20-years ago I used to spend huge amounts of time on various programmer/developer channels on IRC (text-chat only). I would have my IRC-client open all the time, and I would get an audio notice for every new message. Then I would pause working (I was a device driver developer for a certain brand of Point-Of-Sale systems at the time) and I would switch to the IRC-client to read and answer any messages on the channel; or maybe even just to greet new visitors to the channel.

It felt good and I enjoyed my respected status on the channels - but in retrospect, it was a total waste of MY time, and barely any record of those chat-logs exist today.

I view Discord being just more of the same. I completely understand how/why Discord enjoys great success among Gamers, but (IMHO) for grown-ups working on actual projects, it's nothing but a distraction.

I wouldn't want to stop anyone from trying out Discord if they want to feel like they belong to a closely knit community of like-minded people (depending on what group they join), and if you have plenty of time to spare and if your work does not require you to be focused. I did that, and got past that "phase", and I don't want to be there again.

(End of personal history affecting my current opinions...)

I would have to disagree.

Its seen huge success well outside of the game community, with the likes of Epic, Unity, Allegorithmic, Zbrush and Polygon having official discord servers, not to mention hordes of game development companies using it as a base for user testing and community building.

Not saying your wrong, just saying, what may not be right for you may be right for some.

Links to said (very large) discord servers.

Polygon : https://discord.gg/agU3k

Zbrush : https://discord.gg/rUQyf

Allegorithmic : https://discord.gg/yh8GX

I agree with you here. I believe that this is very much needed to open up the Community more. It seems like many people here are stuck with there own ways. I watched yesterday from Zbrush a Twitch stream and this is something that stuck with me. " Back then everyone always kept there workflow Private because they wanted to be the best and Basically keep it secret or only for VIP to know of, but now Everyone is sharing there workflow and making everything transparent" Now in my eyes it is so important that we march on as a TEAM and not stay stuck in our old ways. When I read the forums in 3DCOAT not everyone, but many people do it on Purpose make everything so secretive and talk in "go figure it out yourself language" that the new becomers feels put in a corner just because he asked a simple question and for a Product that is being used professionally in the universities.I believe that is most important that the community doesn't stay close and boundaries. My opinion if you do not open up more and get more input to the newer beginner then the people will just go elsewhere  that's just the way it is in life.

Welcome to the New World.

The advantage of Discord (and other realtime chats) over forums is that you have a higher probability of receiving a direct response from a power-user or one of the devs in virtually no time, and you can enter in real-time conversation with them . It's a lifesaver when you have a burning issue and the deadline is very close by.

That's the main reason I have been trying to grow this community. So far the response has been somewhat cold. But the more people who join and get involved the better it will be.

With a little backing from the 3Dcoat would be as successful as Houdini or Allego's discord.

Takes a while to grow a community... breaking the ice.  I am thinking about joining if I can find time..

Edit: removed mentioning about teamviewer.

Exercise caution with Teamviewer as it can be used for bad purposes (I was recently relieved of $4500 by 'tech support' manipulating my online banking with a phony refund offer). A complaint to the Federal Trade Commission won't get your money back.

Sorry to hear about your loss... ouch big time... Just did some reading and see that some people are using teamviewer for scamming but really all forms of internet communications make us open not only to scams but hacking as well. I did edit my post and remove the statement about Teamviewer though.

I use Skype as my main screen sharing app to help 3DC users.

I think it's a great idea to create a discord server in order to share useful information. I joined and am very satisfied.
I want to say that in general I have been using discord for a very long time. My friends and I use it during network games, it's great to call up on it. And personally, I think discord is great for calling up. Even better than Skype. But that's just my opinion :)
