Rotating the reference plane freely?

I love the reference plane and how it can be set up to lock in place. However, the current model I'm building only has a 45 degree view reference artwork available. Is it possible to rotate the reference plane to other angles that the standard 90 degrees?

Kind regards,

Well, I tried that before, but couldn't get it to rotate on anything other than the horizontal axis. The three-quarter view artwork I have for modelling reference is the correct way up. I need to angle it on the vertical axis so that it will match up with my sculpt. (I'm using symmetry, so can't just sculpt at a rotated offset.)

Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Kind regards,
