[Solved] 3DCoat Modding Tool commercial use

Hello everyone!

I hope this is the right section to post this! I wanted to ask in the announcement section, but the replies are disabled there!

I tried 3DCoat Modding Tool from Steam, and I found it great! I tried many digital 3D painting softwares, but this one is the best! Fast, simple and immediate... Perfect results without any further modification on the textures...
But I could need it not for making skins for games but for painting textures for my chars, chars I will use to make commercial videos with a 3D software. By commercial videos I mean that I will sell those videos to customers.
Can I use the software commercially in that way or it's "linked" only on making in-game skins?

Thanks for any answer!

Sent an email to the support, no answer at all, not even an automated one after all these days.

Definitely a "Don't waste your money!" case.

Or definitely the wrong email, cause Andrew is chin deep in Sculpt Layers development and I keep sending him bugfix requests or other small issues, so I know he is swamped right now. The right email would be sales@3dcoat.com.

If there is no clear indication that you cannot use 3D Coat Modder commercially to sell mods, then you should feel free to do so, unless told otherwise. That's how I would handle it. If there is a commercial use restriction, it is Pilgway's responsibility to communicate that to the customer, not the other way around.

...however, upon further deliberation, if one is taking the models supplied in the $29 Modding tool, and wishes to profit off of models they didn't make, themselves, that seems kind of shady, IMHO. Sort of like going to these 3D Model repositories, and downloading free content, then just slapping on a few Smart Materials, and reselling it as their own content. Even if there is no legal prohibition, it's taking someone's good will or generosity and trying to profit from it.

If it's a model you created yourself, that's a different matter. But just slapping some Smart Materials on someone else's model and selling it as your own, is not a practice anyone should condone.

I don't want to sell models or textures, I want to paint my chars and use them in my videos.

No model or texture distribution, no mods, only rendered videos and images.
But those videos and images are meant to be sold.
So I need to know if I can use the textures generated in 3DCoat Modding Tool on my chars (third party chars that I bought with full license from specialised, trustworthy websites), render videos and images abd then sell them.

Sell the videos and rendered images, not models or textures.

Anyway, your statement is partly wrong. I have seen lots of EULAs (or whatever thay are called now) and they are incredibly cryptic. Often is impossible even get what you are entitled to do with the software. So it's better ask the devs or the companies to explain with simple words "Yes, you can do that" or "no, you cannot do that".

My guess is they didn't stipulate Commercial or Non-Commercial terms because it is a bit beyond the scope of the app, which is marketed to Modders, only. It's a bit strange because it basically gives 3D Coat's painting toolset away for $29, when Substance Painter, it's closest competition and a texture paint only app, is considerably more.

Sorry, I can't get the meaning of your message... :unknw:

I'm saying they didn't release 3D Coat Modding tool to be a Commercial app, but for gamers to custom paint their own skins/assets. That's probably why they didn't stipulate whether it could be used commercially. At $29 (on Steam), it's practically giving the Paint tools away. Therefore, I doubt they had any intentions of it being for anything outside personal usage, only.

They have an app for Commercial usage. The Professional version. You can see toward the bottom of the page, the breakdown of the different versions. The only one for commercial use is the Professional version. 3D Coat offers the same level of texture painting as Substance Painter (which is only a Texture Painting app), and costs less. It offers top shelf Sculpting, better than Mudbox and near ZBrush, for a lot less than ZBrush. It also offers Top-Shelf Retopo (and a decent level of poly-modeling) and UV Editing tools...plus a decent Render for still images or turntables. The only way 3D Coat can keep delivering new features and improvements is for users to support the developer by buying either the Professional or Amateur version.

https://3dcoat.com/buy/

If everyone who wants to use 3D Coat only for texture painting, commercially, just buys the 3D Coat Modding tool, Pilgway will probably go out of business. That's the meaning of my message. If you want to use any version of 3D Coat COMMERCIALLY, you honestly should get the COMMERCIAL/PROFESSIONAL version. Asking them to allow it to be used beyond the scope of it's stated purpose (individual/personal use), may be why they haven't answered yet. It's probably creating a dilemma for them, they didn't intend to face.
