Gnomon – School of Visual Effects, Games and Animation is hosting The Art and Design of Quadrupeds, the latest of its popular free Anatomy Lab workshops, at its Hollywood campus this Saturday, 11 August 2018.

The full-day event, which can be viewed online via the player embedded above, provides practical guidance in drawing, sculpting and even 3D printing animals: this time with a particular focus on quadrupeds.

Masterclasses in drawing, sculpting and animating believable creatures from leading VFX artists
The day kicks off with a session on sketching animals from life from Gnomon instructor Andrea Adams and Mollie Hogan, executive director of nonprofit conservation organisation The Nature of Wildworks.

They will be followed by one of the event’s most unusual talks, in which taxidermist Allis Markham and Nathan Looyenga, founder of 3D printing service Kapow! 3D, reveal how anatomy affects their work.

After an interval, Rhythm & Hues animator Stephen Cunnane – and creator of some very neat videos analysing the walk cycles of mammals and creepy-crawlies – will provide his tips for animating animal gaits.

Finally, Krystal Sae Eua, Blur Studio’s lead character artist, will be providing a live demo of her ZBrush sculpting workflow, focusing on the anatomy of canine limbs.

Anyone interested in attending is advised to arrive early, and to “bring a sketchbook and an inquisitive mind”.
