sphere tool stroke origins - newbie question

Hey guys,

I'm sure this has been asked before but can someone please help me understand the logic behind origin points when drawing things with the sphere tool?

For example, in ortho top view I draw rectangles or brushstrokes etc, but they're placed in various "depth" coordinates, and it's unpredictable. Sometimes it draws things under the grid, I don't understand this. Sometimes the strokes are placed closer to the camera, sometimes further, even in ortho views...

Please help me out, I bought 3DC professional licence and feel invested in this program, but I'm struggling to understand how to draw in 3D space when my strokes are placed on random coordinates.

Thank you in advance

I think there is an option to draw on plane. You'll get a red 2d plane that will dictate the depth and orientation of your strokes. I could be wrong because I don't have it open at the moment.
