Is it possible to move retopo reference mesh in relation to the grid?

When importing a hi poly reference mesh to perform retopology meshes are always placed with the ZX (ground place) grid cutting through the centre of the mesh. I like the grid as it helps orient the view, but I'd mush prefer if it sat below the mesh - like an actual ground plane - as I find it distracting when doing retopology. However, from googling around I haven't managed to find a simple way to move the mesh, change its origin point, or even move the grid. Is there a way to do this?

Any help greatly appreciated.
