I don't think it's ambient occlusion, as it is a smooth domed shape being baked on to a lower poly smooth dome shape. It does feel like a smoothing angle problem, but when setting up the bake, the smoothing angle was set to 60 degrees, which should have resulted in a smooth shape. I did generate a curvature map. And per the recommendation of one of the tutorial videos I saw, I set it to overlay to help enhance the AO map. Could that have caused this perhaps?
