"Freeze" checker displayed in 2D view

I tried painting on a model with the new Pixel Paint functionality (Alpha 64), and painted some very over-the-top bump onto the model (I knew I was using extreme values). When I opened the 2D view, I saw some animated checker pattern in the view, in places where I had painted the bump. The same kind of checker that's normally shown when using the Freeze tool.

It's not a problem, but I wonder, what does the checker in the 2D mean, if it's not Freeze? Is it meant to indicate too extreme displacement values?
