[Solved] Problem with stencil lining up

I found my stencil only works properly when I'm using drawing mode (size is projected from camera, lined up perfectly)

I can use line tool as well. Like image one.

But if I use any of the lasso tool, the geometry I created is not matching up with camera projection for some reason. (I'm working in orthographic btw)

Like Image two.

I'm using 4.9.55(dx)

Been searching for a reason for a while now, please help.

Image one is showing it works fine for drawing tools even for stamp tool.

I used a rectangular lasso build tool to cover the stencil image, getting a displaced, smaller patter on the geometry (I didn't move the stencil, this is the direct result).

Here is the setting bar. I didn't change any settings rather than just hit E to change the paint tool to lasso tool.

Hi

On voxel mode i am following your steps but I cant replicate this issue.

I am using 4.9.56

update*

This issue only occur whenever after I transformed the object bigger or smaller, I tried to apply it to global space or uniform space, didn't seem to help.

In the picture, the thinner line is using the draw tool, which is matching the stencil projection.

EDIT: I tried what Carlosan suggested (reset settings) and it works as expected.

Hi Carlosan , tested on 4.9.56GL, and it's not fixed.

Please try the following steps:

1. Create a voxel cube.

2. scale it, non uniform in one axis.

3. with RMB select to uniform space

4. in orthographic projection apply the stencil with a rectangle lasso...

not working as it should.

Thanks, this worked! Tested on both DX/GL.

EDIT:

This didn't last too long...

Carlosan, could you please try to scale the cube in an axis that affects depth only (not height or length? ) and repro the process again? (to uniform space ect)

When i tested (after reset) I scaled the cube like your screenshot ant it worked, but if i scale the cube like the image in my first post the problem insists.. weird isn't it?

I tried the exact same. Like you said, if I transform it on only one axis at a time, hit uniform space, then stencil will work as intended.

But if I scale the over all shape on all axis, it's bugged. Because I used it for concept art I transform them a lot, that's why mine is always bugged.

Also I can replicate this bug by resampling (without any transform). I also noticed that as the resolution goes higher, the projection will shrink.

Hi Hao!

This is a very ..tricky bug!

If you transform it only one axis at time, It looks that it's working, until you try to "squeeze" (scale down) it in any axis at a time.

In scale down it's not working.

Interestingly this doesn't happen if you try to "grow" (scale up) in any axis at a time.

At least this is how it behaves to me, and it is one reason I thought issue solved with reset settings. I couldn't imagine that it would behave different when scaling up and when scaling down.

That's why I call it a tricky bug..

- I can confirm that it doesn't work in uniform scale, as you already noted.

- I can also confirm It doesn't work when resample a voxel mesh.

(please note I tested only with voxels, not with surface mesh)

Found a Potential fix to this.

I realized that the file type of the stencil affects the outcomes of this issue.

From what i'm gathering, TIFF files are skewing and misaligning.

I've converted each image over to JPEG or PNG and it seems to work!

Not sure if this will fix everyone's problem but thought Id share my findings.
