How to make edits to my model with polygon modeling, after painting?

Example: I started with one of the 3Dcoat default models and painted on it a little. I tried different rooms like Modeling and Retopo, but none of the tools I tried could edit the original mesh — nothing happened when I tried to use them on the model.

Only the Tweak room worked, but I want precise control of polygons, points, and edges, not this sculpt-like workflow:

Here's an example from Cinema 4D (but Blender and others can do this too); the dog is already painted but I can easily and grab the exact edges I want and move them:

Or add some new geometry to the scene and paint it:

Is it possible in 3DC?
