What dose View -> Low-Poly do?

What does this option do, exactly? My mesh is imported from .fbx, and it shouldn't have a low poly version. However, this option makes it looks slightly different in 3DCoat:

Low-Poly off:

Low-Poly on:

The difference is very subtle but it's there. What does this option do? Does it generate a low-poly version (like auto-retopo) for my mesh? The mesh is already quite low-poly to begin with.
