3DC Forum organization & changes

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I have made some recent changes to the forums. Including getting rid of one of the WIP sections (by way of merging the two WIP areas). Creating a new Finished Gallery section. I've also organized forums into logical categories to help locate specific forums, especially for new users.

What do you all think of the changes?

Another thing I'll be posting is FAQs in the near future, for many different things. I have a request for the community... I don't have a lot of time to scour the forums, so what I would like is this:

If you have a frequently asked question, or topic that you know the answer to, please email me (see email below), subject heading: 3DC - FAQ. This could be anything relating to 3DC. From texture painting to voxels, you name it, I want it. I will be going through all of the submissions and compiling them into a nice and tidy FAQ that I'll post up on the new announcement section. :)

Also, on the same note, this one is a little further out, but, if you have a tip or trick that you would like to see in the new announcement section for the tips and tricks, also please email me, subject heading: 3DC - Tips & Tricks

Nutshell version:

Subject Heading for tipsntricks: 3DC - Tips & Tricks

Subject Heading for FAQ: 3DC - FAQ

My email is: 3dcoat [AT] javisjones [DOT] com

OK, thanks all. I look forward to your crits & comments! :brush:

Change is a good thing & it's also pretty good to see the change was done fairly quickly after it was identified it was needed.

With myself I find after a while with software I start to visit only the forums & not the software 'homepage' so I somewhat selfishly expect some 'homepage' features within a forum 'micro-site'. To explain another way, I think the forum should duplicate features of the homepage. Specifically features to encourage learning & development and anything that can inspire creativity.

I think we do a pretty good job here, and the tidy-up of gallerys can only be improved by links to more resources.

We've seen posts regarding a resource of brushes - there are many other potential resources so it could be difficult to control the organisation of this unless we think in advance.

FAQs - yes yes yes to Faqs. But being a FAQ they should be written for newbies, which means a more experienced user is NOT the best author of a FAQ unless they're skilled at the friendly-dumbing-it-down aspect.

Offtopic stuff - I personally see forum moderation on this category as a good thing. The somewhat recent "Religion" debate in my opinion was not healthy and had its fair share of troll-like behaviour. I'd like to have seen it locked to be honest.

Finally at times of change like this don't forget to pat yourselves on the back for a job well-done already, and further pats for wanting to do better!

All the best,

Robbie

Thanks everyone! I am trying to keep it simple. ;)

Ghostdog, thanks for all the input! I too hardly ever go to the main site after a little while... I tend to hit the forums almost exclusively. So I too like to have a micro-site for feature that you would find on the main site. I will surely include a sticky post in the announcement section containing all the tutorials, downloads, and other such information. I'd like to see the forums vibrant and full of information with links to all external information there is!

For the FAQs, I will definitely try to keep things as simple as possible. I am entirely open to suggestions and help, just email me at the above email if anyone wants to do so. I plan to have as much information posted right at the top of the forums so people can get the information as instantaneously as possible. Anyway, I will run the editing through someone that doesn't even know 3D to see how readable it is, and then run it through someone that is a 3D newbie. Just to make sure it is as easy to follow as possible.

Hey Taros,

I took a look but I couldn't find anything on there for this setting. I will let Andrew know, but just in case he can't do anything either... I wanted to let you know that the webmaster will be away for almost 2 weeks, so it probably wont change until he gets back. Just FYI!
