Marquee Select On Stencil Tool Goes All the Way Through The Object

I'm trying to learn the Stencil tool and I am a bit flummoxed.  If I use the tool to paint with a brush, it cuts into the form in more or less the way I'd expect, but if I make *any* kind of marquee or lasso selection, it cuts *all the way through the object.* This behavior seems to persist with whatever tool I use (Base Clay, Vox Hide, etc.)...how can I set the marquee/lasso tools to only cut to a fixed depth?  Please advise.

personally that looks fine , anything black or invisible shouldnt be affected , i just checked on 2025.01 and its works perfectly , however base clay has brush features that blurs and smudges the edges to give the effect of real clay, use wet clay or any surface tool and you should be a perfect defined texture

for cutting through you need this

push E for brush menu then check depth limit and set it to a desired depth as you can see 5 is quite deep so its trial and error

Thanks...for anyone reading this, the "Depth Limit" in the Stroke Mode panel (the one you bring up with the "E" key) is important here.  It might need to be set *very* low to avoid cutting all the way through the model.  (Also, it seems to work better in orthographic views.)
