Hi everyone,

Just thought I would give you a heads up on a fantastic new development in the world of 3D Game Creation.

Unity 3D, a really great, easy to use Game Engine for PC, Mac, Web, Wii and iphone games is now free:

http://unity3d.com/

You can import obj files created in 3d coat into your games. The indie license can be used for commercial and non-commercial purposes.

Check it out! It almost rocks as much as 3d coat!

Wow, I had no idea Unity supported LightWave files, including bones and animation. That makes things a LOT easier.

Yeah it really does! Looks like I'll be digging into the engine sooner rather then later thanks to them doing this.

Very cool of them to release it as such, well, save for the people that recently purchased it. :p:

From CGDigg: "Everyone who bought Unity Indie in the last sixty days are alternately being offered full refunds if they don’t wish to upgrade to the Pro version."

I just installed it and it seems to load fine at least. I went to the video tutorials on the website and they don't play for me, well I get audio, but the video is solid white.

As for the virtual gallery this is very cool for that since it has a web player, meaning no downloads aside from the 3MB browser plugin. It might be tough to do for a site like this though since there would have to be rules I think, like anything submitted to the gallery would have to have this polycount and textures no bigger than this, etc.

This is great although it sounds like it has some watermark or something but i haven't tested just yet. I looked at the forum yesterday and there seems to be a load of upset people because to the people that purchased before a certain date they don't get a refund, glad i didn't buy this at first then because i considered it. In anycase this seems like it will be great for free! :D

So I installed it and ran it with the demo level that comes with it. It's not exactly the Cry Engine, but I've seen worse. It looks like Battlefield 1942 quality. I also notice that it has output options for Wii, but not PS2 or 360. not that I'd be needing that , but it tells you something about what it's capable of. But still... it's free.

The import wizard information online stated it could read Carrara mesh, bones and animation via .FBX export from Carrara but this didn't turn out to be true. Pity really as had uses for it if it could read Carrara's export as I currently don't have any other software capable of exporting animated Mesh to Unity.

Today I've tried to drum-up support from other Carrara users to convince Daz to fix the incomplete/broken .fbx exporter, so that the relationship I hope to have with Unity will blossom :)

Daz have stated a renewed interest in the Game Dev market so I actually have every hope that within a short-time I'll add Unity to my 3DC/Carrara->game workflow

Just hobbyist at this stage, not that there is anything wrong with that.

It's the November newsletter. Sorry the URL changes every month. I asked if there was a permanent link and Ben Vost, who was my editor said no and that he had complained about it too.

Anyway here's the current link. Scroll down a bit:
