Contributor artman Posted December 9, 2014 Contributor Report Share Posted December 9, 2014 That's a very good question. Can masks for PBR materials be painted in real time, with brushes? What if a PBR material already has a mask already applied from file. Can we still paint on top of that mask to modify it, without modifying the file itself? And then, if we're happy with the result, apply the changes to mask file? no,masks are loaded...in the mask slot. Like you would in 3Ds max when loading a map in th opacity channel. Its a tile...paiinting it real time would feel weird, it is tiled tons of times across your model,it would not feel like painting a mask on your model....as I wrote before you need to prepare you maps before using the editor and the masking map is an important layer to prepare...(you can use noise for masking if you dont want to bother painting one) (you can get away with just noise, color values ect without feeding image sources but you will hit a wall sooner or later ,maybe if Andrew implement Voronoi noise to complement Perlin more effects will be obtainable ...but maps from image sources are very efficent (especially if you use Bitmap2material) but to answer GregP question too...you will still be able to paint mask in paint room and use them as clip mask in Layer blending tab to mix between the different materials that were filled. (like substance Painter) (currently metalness and gloss are not properly masked by it but Andrew seems to not have touched this aspect of things yet, he said most of channel copying/clearing functions ect.. are not done yet. Im 100% confident clip mask will be compatible with gloss and metalness in final release build)
Javis
Still not metallic enough. Needs specular tightness and distribution per surface irregularities. I'm given'er all she's got Captain! 100% metalness is the maximum. Screenshot:
philnolan3d
Just curious, is that just a slider or can you click the 100% number and type in a huge one?
Javis
Just curious, is that just a slider or can you click the 100% number and type in a huge one? You sure can, though it starts producing unrealistic and eventually weird results, unless that's what you want. (not what I wanted with that mat)
Member EduardoMC Posted December 10, 2014 Member Report Share Posted December 10, 2014 Any news on the beta? Andrew said on the 17th it would take about a week for the beta to release but I haven't seen anything on twitter from him since. Got a project coming up and would really love to use it, heck I upgraded to professional version for that reason. Cheers! Eduardo

Eduardo I think there is an early preliminary build in the Google Drive location where the Beta Builds are released. Maybe I misunderstood Andrew, but I thought he put something up to play around with, a bit until he polishes everything up. Maybe others can chime in and clarify it further. Advanced Member Marc Wakefield Posted December 10, 2014 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 10, 2014 My sources say... Soon. EEEeeek! Very excited. Do you guys recommend buying Bitmap2Material? It looks like it could be a really useful tool for building a 3D Coat 4.5 compatible material library. Any thoughts? Cheers, Marc
Javis
EEEeeek! Very excited. Do you guys recommend buying Bitmap2Material? It looks like it could be a really useful tool for building a 3D Coat 4.5 compatible material library. Any thoughts? Cheers, Marc Hey Marc! Yes, definitely. It's almost necessary. You could use PixPlant, nDo or Bitmap2Material. PixPlant only makes 4 different maps (diffuse, displacement, normal and spec), but I have found for it's randomness and ease of use, it's worth it. Bitmap2Material produces a lot more maps, and with more control than PixPlant. I consider nDo close to but with less controls Bitmap2Material, but more control than PixPlant. I also use Filter Forge to make some cool stuff with to turn into PBR Materials. Lately the best combination I've found, for me, is using PixPlant for randomness, save the diffuse and then use Bitmap2Material for the rest of maps. Or Filter Forge for the diffuse/albedo, then Bitmap2Material for the maps, again.
Advanced Member Marc Wakefield Posted December 10, 2014 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 10, 2014 Thanks for the advice Javis. Just bought B2M3 pro. I am sure it is going to be really useful to me going forward. It is going to save me a bucket load of time in so many areas.

Advanced Member stusutcliffe Posted December 10, 2014 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 10, 2014 I've got some "boob" armour that needs metalling.....hurry up...... Javis, there is a running gag on the Daz 3d website....when they say "it's coming soon" everybody laughs and knows not to expect anything anytime soon! I'm pretty sure Andrews version of "soon" is similar to the dictionary definition!.....
Carlosan
running gag on the Daz 3d website... could you pm me the link please ? ty
Advanced Member stusutcliffe Posted December 10, 2014 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 10, 2014 Sorry Carlosan , wouldnt know where to find anything. Its generally centered around the "Carrara" forum, every beta or upgrade is always gonna be "soon" I think I waited about 3 years for Carrara 8 to 8.5! Now we are waiting for Version 9. But, I think if I went to the Daz developement offices I would probably find it all boarded up.....they might possibly be working on vers 9....they said they were......about a year ago.....anyway, if they are working on it , it's definitely gonna be here soon. Advanced Member Marc Wakefield Posted December 10, 2014 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 10, 2014 I was really hoping Carrara 9 would make an appearance some time this year but it never came. I have given up on it now though and I am way to comfortable with Blender to ever go back. It is a shame as I have used it for years but Daz definitely seem to have dropped the ball as far as Carrara is concerned. That being said, if it ever appears I will probably upgrade anyway. Always good to have a full arsenal and it is usually pretty cheap. Now we are waiting for Version 9. But, I think if I went to the Daz developement offices I would probably find it all boarded up I reckon it would be a wild west style ghost town with only tumble weed blowing through ;-)
Advanced Member stusutcliffe Posted December 10, 2014 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 10, 2014 They would get the tumbleweed from the Daz store for $1.99! I jumped into Blender for a good month, I did ok but those node thingys Look like a plate of spaghetti to me. Carrara is fine for me as is anyway. I like using the hair. Carrara is nice and simple ...just like me.... Going of topic here I feel.....

Contributor artman Posted December 11, 2014 Contributor Report Share Posted December 11, 2014 Unfortunately I don't think there is. its called masks.rar...just extract and replace files from 3DC directory. Its Alpha not beta so lots of stuff still in development on Andrew's side.
Advanced Member Marc Wakefield Posted December 11, 2014 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 11, 2014 Hmmm... What is the location of this magical drive?
Carlosan
Btw, in gdrive folder - there is masks.rar and materials.3dcpack. It is not beta! It is alpha or tech demo - only for those who is ready to risk! I renew it almost daily. So if you still want - download, unrar, overwrite installation folder and look. Keep backup of Docs/3D-CoatV4/patterns folder. And it is not for announcements anywhere. Reputable Contributor AbnRanger Posted December 12, 2014 Reputable Contributor Report Share Posted December 12, 2014 @Pilgway Helper Do you know if they planned to sell this PBR feature for the STEAM version ? Marc It will be, and it's a free update to those with V4 licenses. Remember, though, Steam only lists updates that are considered "offical" releases. Such as V4, V4.1, etc. They might update it once in a while to the latest "stable release." But for most builds, you will need to stop by this forum, on the build release page (first page in the "V4 Beta/Experimental" thread).
