A new format to store .obj and .stl

http://openctm.sourceforge.net/?page=about

An STL file can usually be compressed to 5-6% of its

original size.

That is a pretty scary ratio. :o

The Xnormal guy added support to import compressed meshes in this format.

He says a 10 mil .obj can be brought to 1 MB with absolutely no loss of details.

I simply dont understand, its just too much a difference in size.

its easy really :) STL and OBJ are ASCII files, where as this fileformat seems to be both binary and compressed.

Ascii files store data in a less efficient manner than Binary and are also usually pretty much human readable which means the end up holding a lot of waste data
