philnolan3d
I've talked about Crazy Bump here before but believe it or not I've found something better. Pixplant does the same thing as Crazy Bump, creates normal, spec, & depth textures from a Photo. I've seen other programs that do this but none matched CB's quality. Pixplant matches the quality if not better, plus it has a nicer interface, plus as a pleasant surprise it also makes the texture seamless. There're also a few more features like straightening or correcting perspective on and image. The best part it's a lot cheaper than CB. This is fantastic for making Materials to paint with in 3DC. http://www.pixplant.com/

Javis
Wow, that looks amazingly powerful, and quick. For this type of work I think it would be invaluable. The price is a little steep, but the time saved I suppose one could justify it. The question is: Stand alone or the PS plugin version? philnolan3d
I'm using the Stand-Alone version, I have a feeling it would have more options than the PS one. It's a little pricey but consider than CB does less and costs $300. Edit: Here I made these textures based on the attached image. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3083393/grate_01_material.zip You can thank Dave Davidson (@max3ddotorg on Twitter) for telling me about it. Javis
That's pretty cool. I'm going to have to pick up a copy of this soon. Thanks for the heads up!
philnolan3d
I was actually just using it again last night and I was blown away again. This is what I got from loading a photo of some wood planks.
Advanced Member 3DArtist Posted April 14, 2010 Advanced Member Share Posted April 14, 2010 Nice, that turned out pretty good. Can you bring in existing diffuse, displacement, normal, spec maps and create a tiled version? PhotoSculpt and PixPlant could be a killer combo. philnolan3d
I'm looking through the help file and I don't see any way of doing that, maybe I'm just not seeing it.
Advanced Member wailingmonkey Posted April 14, 2010 Advanced Member Share Posted April 14, 2010 3DArtist, from the 'support' section: http://www.pixplant.com/video/screencast4-600/ (shows how to set up the repeating 'seed'...reckon you could allow for much greater variety than that example, tho, with a bigger selection set)
Advanced Member 3DArtist Posted April 14, 2010 Advanced Member Share Posted April 14, 2010 Thanks guys. I downloaded the demo and I don't see the option of doing anything non-tiled or using existing maps. It works pretty good for what it does though. philnolan3d
Well if you want no tiling just change this to "None".
Advanced Member 3DArtist Posted April 14, 2010 Advanced Member Share Posted April 14, 2010 Sorry, I meant non-seed-generated.
philnolan3d
I actually did it on the wood that I used in 3DC, however I couldn't get it to work again when I made the example above. I think all I did was hold Shift when clicking the generate button (which changes to "Generate with current seed only").
