16 and 32 bit image maps?

I'm trying to paint some 16bit and 32bit displacement maps using 3dCoat (manually painting a "color" map to use in Max for displacement). 3DC keeps converting things to 8bit colour space though. Is there a way to work with either 16 or 32 bit in 3DC? If not are there plans to support that?
