Hi, I'm from France and this is my first actual attempt at getting into 3D (I've tried my hand at Blender a few times before but quickly gave up).

I've decided to try out 3DCoat after watching a vulgarization video about standard modelling workflows for videogames (from a series named Pause Process, really recommend it to any French speaker, it explain in layman's terms many technical aspects of the videogame industry), the way it described the voxel approach really interested me, as making a topology from scratch was what put me off the most in my previous attempts at modelling. The user-friendly texturing method and PBR seemed impressive too.

Since I'm (almost) completely new to 3D modelling, I decided to start with a hard-surface project (after a dozen hours looking at tutorials to get familiar with the software), I'm done with the sculpt now (A Desert Eagle pistol) and at the retopo phase. Satisfied with the result so far. I plan on porting it to the Unreal Engine once I'm done, maybe make it into a mod or something.

Organic sculpting seems pretty cool too, but I'm afraid I'll end up with something like the clay stuff I made in preschool, since it's not as angular and clear-cut as hard-surface, and I'm not much of a 2D artist to begin with. Should I look for specific tutorials beforehand (especially ones about human forms and proportions)?

Anyway, seeing the beautiful stuff you guys manage to create is really motivating. I can only hope I can reach the same skill level at some point, though I suppose that will take quite some time.

Nice , welcome to the community .

3D Coat will get you in the right path really really quickly.

My advice is to keep with Hard S for start do not mix them.

Later when you feel more confident go ahead and experiment.

3D Coat official youtube channel is full of good tutorials to start with.

Having just got 3dcoat my questions are always too out there . I mean I havent even got it working yet and  there is no txtr export with obj , neither of the two txtr tabs do anything  ,so is this common for the educational copy or is there some enabling tab Ineed to know about . The times it did export a map it was pitch black , as all this worked in the trial I assume there is a preferences that I cannot find or a setting . I cant find anything and nobody else seems to have the problem  so maybe by the time you answere Ill know or maybe I wont . Anyway here I go again.     thanks for any help     nick

Regarding my search for txtr export in 3dcoat I notice uv in retopo room  but not in uv room its a blank shape    in paint room uv window  so how to transfer details from each room to the next  may be the problem , I heard the expression merge to.... but no explanation how . Probably the export tab is finding a blank uv, in tutorials these details are in the txtr editor window  , but for me its blank,  so again , apply uv has to be somewhere right .    Anyway that may make an answere more easy    I think thats the problem      thanks for an answere    nick

Im a noob  still at the normal map stage .Ive posted some pics about detail and where it goes . I am sending to iclone and do not know which normal setup that is , I tried maya and no good , you can see nothing comes out atall . I am trying the others , noone it seems uses iclone , its good for animating , but dont like 3dcoat maps . If anything occurs to anybody please let me know . There are a lot of variables here and so a lot of tests going nowhere .   Maybe somebodys already done it , that would be nice      thanks nick

Hello everyone! My name is Gabriel, from Boston, MA, and I was introduced to 3D Coat last year of October and I love it! It was one of the best decisions for my portfolio since I lacked in the 3d department lol Ive tried other 3d programs and failed miserably so kudos to 3dcoat! Other than that, Ive been seeing a lot of good stuff in the gallery. I can't wait to show some of my stuff!

Hi evereyone !

I'm from France and would love to learn 3D modeling !

3D coat seems very user friendly (I have watched some tutorials on Youtube). I've seen that a contest started yesterday (a steampunk vehicle) and I would like to participate. However I have no skills neither with 3D modeling, sculpting or texturing do you think it's achievable in the alloted time ?

I'd say to just dive in. Some people take to this stuff a lot faster than others. And even if it all goes horribly wrong and you feel like you can't do anything, you'll still know more in a months time than you know right now.

Youtube videos are always a good source of information, there's the official 3d coat channel of course, but I think the best ever "series" I've seen is from a regular user who goes through a little project from start to finish:

This should get you going with the basics.

Hi everyone, :good2:

I am from Colombia, South America. I love sculpt 3D in 3D-Coat. I beginning in blender, I make shortfilm with him and some works of modeling.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_ve0o4w6bU

I meet 3D-Coat looking for a program that would allow me to make characters from the beginning to the end of a comfortable way and had the best processes, but that was not so expensive because for now I'm starting my career as a 3D artist. I am self taught and I don't have any support of formal school. In my country it is complicated projects move forward and find a good job. I want to be an excellent 3D artist and 3D-Coat I think is the best tool that exists to achieve in all conditions, including the most difficult, as is my case.

Here my first sculpture in 3D-Coat. :paint2:  I hope you like it.

Hello. My name is Alexander I'm 19 years old, I'm from a small town in Russia. Became interested in 3D graphics recently (a week ago).. what nebudu Studies in this field extremely difficult as most of the educational material in English with whom I have a big problem. 5 minutes ago I registered to participate in the contest steampunk. I hope to quickly learn the skills of modeling and renderingto apply them in my main hobby (2D digital painting), my work can be seen here http://ay1.artstation.com .

Alexander, you might really enjoy the Learn Squared courses that teach 3D Coat along with Photoshop for very quick Concept Art production. There is some really awesome artwork coming from students of the course...many are professionals in the field, just honing their craft and using the course to learn how 3D Coat can speed up their workflow by utilizing 3D Content without all the piddling with polygons, vertices and edges and obsessing over topology while constructing objects.

Hello,

I am Dr Mahendra Singh and I am a neurosurgeon aged 44. I want to learn 3D Coat (actually 3D anatomy for illustrations),last year after lot of researches I found out that 3d coat should be better than ZBrush, I am still clueless as to how to start? What all can be provided by 3D Coat if I want to create - suppose Brain surgery sequences, only form? or colors too? What about the environment of the diagram? Z Brush is extremely organized in terms of anatomy teaching while 3d coat is not.

I am considering buying ZB as well owing to plenty of anatomy tuts of the same at all forums. Can anybody guide me how should I start and what I should do further in an order to become an excellent 3D Artistry.

Thanks

There is actually a version of 3D Coat strictly intended for the Medical/Dental purposes. It's called PlastyCad. It doesn't have all the tools for gaming and animation, just the modeling and sculpting tools one would need in the Medical or Dental professions.

http://www.plastycad.com/

http://www.3diemme.it/pro_plastyCAD.aspx?lang=EN

As for the lack of Anatomy tutorials, using 3D Coat, Zbrush had already carved out this niche in the market before 3D Coat ever came onto the scene, in 2007-2008. Thus, the lions share of the market still belongs to them, including a lot of the seasoned artists, who would normally teach anatomy. There still exists a lot of bias toward ZBrush from the same group of people, and that is understandable. They already knew ZBrush well, and it still is the most mature sculpting app, but 3D Coat has come a long way over the past several years and carved it's own little niche of sorts, with Voxel modeling/sculpting. You don't have to concern yourself with topology and building a model using clean quads the way you do in ZBrush or Mudbox (Mudbox is practically dead software at this point as Autodesk has practically stopped development on it).

Zbrush also doesn't have dynamic subdivision, like you have in Surface mode of 3D Coat. You also don't have the option to paint in layers, with blending modes and all, both on a high poly model and a low poly, UV mapped model, like you do in 3D Coat. The Retopology tools, UV layout and Paint tools in 3D Coat are superior to ZBrush's. So, ZB certainly has it's own merits, but we also have ours, and not just in terms of price/value. That said, there is nothing you could sculpt in ZBrush, that you couldn't do in 3D Coat, so for your purposes, you could save yourself hundreds and just follow along those anatomy courses in 3D Coat.

I have such a book for sculpting anatomy in ZBrush (by Scott Spencer), that includes a DVD with video lessons from it....and that's what I do/did.

,,,,as for getting started in 3D Coat, this is a good one to watch, then the following playlist, for more abbreviated videos that step through the different workspaces.

Hello from France.

As software developper myself in the field of 2D Bitmap Animation ( tvpaint.com ), I use to try various kind of software, mostly by curiosity and to learn something new everyday.

I wanted to go deeper into 3D (it's relaxing for me to discover 3D, as I'm a 2D specialist ! Don't ask me why ;) ) , so I tried various stuff such as Blender, Silo, Maya, 3DMax, ZBrush, Substance Painter  ... and discovered 3D Coat.

Well, I felt in love with your product.

I'm a newbie in this field, I might ask stupid questions.

Very cool, and welcome aboard. I remember TV Paint from a conversation on the Newtek forums, years ago. Weren't you guys somewhat affiliated with Newtek at some point in the past? Nonetheless, it was very impressive then. I can imagine how much more so it is now. If have to do any 2D animation work, I will definitely look at TV Paint first. It seemed to be a great alternative to Toon Boom, if I recall correctly.

Make sure to check out the videos on the 3D Coat Youtube Channel. There are probably a few hundred on there...not that you will need to watch anywhere near that many, but they are there to sort of cherry pick what you need know:

Hey guys I am new to 3d sculpting I hope I converse with a lot of people here.

Welcome. You'll find this forum very helpful, and make sure to check out the extra brush packs, PBR shaders and such in the 3D Coat Exchange Library section. You can also find some extra resources from the main page, under the DOWNLOAD tab. The Tinker pack is especially helpful.

My name's Brian. I am a hobbyist (especially until I raise the cash for a full version of the software). I am a stay at home parent, so in between bouts of raising a 3 year old bent on world domination, I try my hand at working with 3dCoat.

I *love* this program. I use Blender sometimes for a rough layout of whatever doodle I end up working on, or a head from 3D sculpt (An app for tablets), and fiddle accordingly. While I can model in Blender- my texturing/ UV mapping is useless to the point of nightmare. I have *tried*, darnit. :-P 3D coat makes me almost look like I know what I'm doing. I can make a wide variety of textures (and have). My most fun challenge has been a brick wall from a nearby church. NOTHING lines up- as in, there's not a single, solitary mortar line that is even remotely straight! Not a software, or even camera problem. The mortar is simply *that* squiggly.

As time goes on, I hope to have something substantial to show off.
