philnolan3d
I think I have most of the voxel modeling done for this. It's all made of primitives and E Panel cutting, except for 2 spots where I used cutting tools made in LightWave.
Advanced Member chris_solo Posted March 20, 2011 Advanced Member Report Share Posted March 20, 2011 hey Nice Phil!

Advanced Member GeeJay Posted March 21, 2011 Advanced Member Report Share Posted March 21, 2011 Cool! How did you get the stock and the grip to be so smooth yet clean?
philnolan3d
The whole thing is just primitive objects either one jammed into another or using one as a cutting tool and using the E Panel tools. Very little of it (mostly on the handle) was actual sculpting with a stylus. Otherwise I just kept it pretty low res, most of the 11 layers are still at 1X. Here's a turntable with some new additions: http://3d-coat.com/turntableID=130068997887
Advanced Member Garagarape Posted March 21, 2011 Advanced Member Report Share Posted March 21, 2011 Nice shapes! It doesn't look like a X1 resolution to me. Did you scale down primitives to make it more dense or something?
philnolan3d
Thanks! After looking again maybe I shouldn't say most of it is still 1X, but a good chunk is. here's how it breaks down: The total poly count is 5.5 million tris. Advanced Member Garagarape Posted March 24, 2011 Advanced Member Report Share Posted March 24, 2011 That's very clean for a 5.5 million model. Well done! I guess there is a way to cut voxel properly. I noticed that the result can be slightly different depending on where you chose to cut surfaces, and the density of primitives used for boolean. Looking forward to seeing your next sculpt! philnolan3d
Thanks right now I'm still finishing this up, it will be part of a tutorial for 3D World mag. They probably wouldn't like me posting any more WIPs than I already have though.
Advanced Member Scott Padbury Posted March 24, 2011 Advanced Member Report Share Posted March 24, 2011 pretty cool Phil, nice and clean. Question, did you build all your parts in 3DC or did you bring in parts made in Lightwave for instance?
Contributor LJB Posted March 24, 2011 Contributor Report Share Posted March 24, 2011 Looking good Phil, you gonna texture this and distress a little?
philnolan3d
Scott: Everything was in 3DC except for two spots I had a box with rounded corners from LightWave that I used as a cutting tool. Leigh: Yup, I just finished Retopo and UVs. Getting started on textures today. This tutorial was going to be due tomorrow, thank goodness they extended it because they need more than what I already wrote and videos too. Advanced Member Digital777 Posted March 27, 2011 Advanced Member Report Share Posted March 27, 2011 Wow this is great, nice work 3DC is starting to get good for non organic sculpting now, you can sort of notice the rough edges on the 1x objects but i have been hoping the new work being done by farsthary will help with that. This new Smooth Mesh surface tool by farsthary seems like it could help with rough edges without needing to have really high resolutions - http://farsthary.wordpress.com/2011/03/24/3dcoat-smoothmesh/
philnolan3d
Thanks, wait until you see the textured version. The roughness you see may be due to the depth shader I'm using that has rougher looking edges. This roughness doesn't come through to the painting room. philnolan3d
Finally finished up the tutorial, it's 6 pages plus video in issue 143, keep an eye out! I expect that any minute now Live Clay will be released and completely negate my tutorial.
