Andrew Shpagin
I agree with you that 3D-Gem is not good new name for 3D-Brush. I really like name "3D-Brush" and logo made by Mikael Strom. But... While we are small and are not problematic for ZB all bill be ok. But if our business will contradict with interests of Pixologic something bad may occur... Different peoples warned us about it. I like to do my job and communication with you, but I don't like law issues. So it is better to change name now. I will be thankful if you will help to find some really great solution. I think that it could be good to preserve green blob in logo (I like it and you too I think ), it could be good to preserve letter 'B' in name. For example 3D-Bump But, any other suggestions are also welcome. 'B' is not so importand, is more important. For example 3D-Emboss 3D-Layer 3D-Oil I think that it is also important that name must tell what program do. So I like 3D-Layer - it is exactly what program do and it corresponds to green blob. The other reason - 3DB is like a layer between different applications.

Advanced Member yukon_28 Posted February 21, 2008 Advanced Member Share Posted February 21, 2008 Andrew, it your decision at the end, but i really think you need to speak more with lawyers, all you have in common with zbrush is "brush", and brush is a WORD, i hardly believe someone could monopolize word. Anyway, if there no chance to keep old name, I'd call this program 3d-pen, i think is much better then 3d-gem.
Member Lahoreh Posted February 21, 2008 Member Share Posted February 21, 2008 I think the name must be really explicit for all people even people that are totally new in 3D world and reflect all the capacities of the software... 3D Gem doesn't reflect all of that in my opinion... I have some suggestions taken from 5 mns of time... So maybe it is not totally accurate ... or not explicit for other ! 3D-Draw, 3D-Drawing, 3D-Layer Draw, 3D Layer Coat 3D Splatter, 3D Undercoat (Maybe with a funny green troll logo that open his coat to show us a beautiful sculpted armor in comic style/parody ..) 3D Pen Illustrator I saw some interesting names in the suggestions in this thread but i'm not sure if they cover all the possibilities of the software... For me 3D brush was not a synonym of Z brush, but more an call from photoshop brushes applied in 3D world.. So maybe it is possible to alter a little the actual name without to change it: 3D Brushes 3D Photobrush 3D artist/artistic-brush Or even something more original like: 3D Faery Brush (With a green faery, a magic pen in her hand, personnaly i would choose this) Originality and/or humor is sometime something that retain the attention of people Hope i'm not totally silly with my idea and that could help a little! I know how it is hard to find sometimes the right name

Advanced Member jaf Posted February 21, 2008 Advanced Member Share Posted February 21, 2008 Hard to come up with a good one. 3D Surface Mesh-Paint Mesh Painter DigiPaint 3D Finish 3D Finesse Mesh Finesse (it rhymes)
Advanced Member paulrus Posted February 21, 2008 Advanced Member Share Posted February 21, 2008 Mesh Paint is a commercial product already. DigiPaint was the first paint program created by NewTek (Lightwave 3D, Video Toaster, etc.). 3D cream sounds like a computer generated porno. I like the sound of 3D Mason a lot. It has a very strong feeling to it. Craftwork sounds good (I would like Craftwork 3D), but if he's afraid of using the word Brush because of ZBrush he might have to worry about the band Kraftwerk suing over the use of the name too. Artisan is a great word, but it too is already a commercial product. Brushmore makes me smile, but I somehow think of it as being the name of a stuffy English butler. "Brushmore! Bring me some tea!" Ivory is nice, but it's the name of soap here in the US. If you're worried about ZBrush suing you, try using a name from a household item! Member forcelle Posted February 21, 2008 Member Share Posted February 21, 2008 An online brainstorm session. Hope i'm not totally silly with my idea and that could help a little! Nothing is silly on a brainstorm session, Lahoreh. Hmm, well, did you consider to use just "3DB"? You might play with the letters, like: 3dB 3db 3dB. (adding a dot might give something different to it ) or using the "layer" idea, something like: 3d BrushLayer 3d BLayer but I like the overcoat idea also. 3D OverCoat OverCoat ... (some cool idea)
Reputable Contributor digman Posted February 21, 2008 Reputable Contributor Share Posted February 21, 2008 My suggestion for a new name: 3D Imager Your program transforms a base mesh by adding detail and is a paint program
Advanced Member Frankie Posted February 21, 2008 Advanced Member Share Posted February 21, 2008 I don't see any problem with 3d Brush, but I'm not a lawyer. My guess is anything you can find will end up with a word or two already used by another company. The best is to combine words which is exactly the case with 3d Brush. Now the more words the less likely the problems arise obviously. So here's my little contribution if you're not to keep 3d brush Art Brush 3D 3Detailer 3Detail

Reputable Contributor digman Posted February 21, 2008 Reputable Contributor Share Posted February 21, 2008 I like Frankie's "3Detailer" as a name.I also was thinking of that name but a company had a program name called 3D Detailer. The company I believe is now out of business and 3Detailer is different in spelling also. Hey, "3D Imager" is still not bad though LOL.

Advanced Member StereoMike Posted February 21, 2008 Advanced Member Share Posted February 21, 2008 Regarding trademarks, I guess somebody has to ask a lawyer how far you have to stay away from competing products or stuff that has nothing at all to do with your business (soap or something). Or if you can't use 'brush' at all when you're developing a sculpt application. Another one: PolyPaint PolyBrush PointPaint (you could make cool logos cause only one letter changes from point to paint) PolyTex PolyBeat (beat out cars) PolyForce PaintForce Paintball I find using '3D' with a long word kinda ugly. The word starts to feel constructed and gets weak and easy to forget. 3D- comes best with one syllable like 'brush' or 'bruise'. Hey: 3D Bruise I liked also 3detailer and 3DB - but it's difficult to get a short domain nowadays mike

My only concern with Detailer (which also sounds good) is the old Fractal Design Detailer. Not sure whether Viewpoint corp has any ties to the old Metacreations products anymore. I also like choover's suggestion '3DB'. rj

It is short, sweet, simple, clean, professional sounding and it has a nice ring to it. We will all remember that it stands for 3D Brush anyway. As long as we all keep promoting this fantastic program to everyone, it won't matter too much what it is called.
