Paint Functions & Panels
3DCoats roots are with 3D texture painting, and has many painting tools and functions. Whether you’re painting Color, Spec or Depth, they can also be modified by using Materials, which contain their own color, spec and depth information. Let’s take a look at some of these.
Painting with Color
You can paint with basic color or randomly with the two colors chosen from the main Color Swatches. You can also paint with a random color chosen between those two swatches. This panel can be accessed by clicking the LMB on the Color Paint Toggle or the “C” key.

Painting with Glossiness
The degree of glossiness to paint with. Gloss Intensity controls what can be considered the amount of the Glossiness. Spec. Opacity controls the overall opacity applied in your strokes. This panel can be accessed by clicking the LMB on the Glossiness Paint Toggle or the “R” key.

Painting with Depth
Painting with Depth allows you to create image based topological extrusions and cavity details. This Depth is internal to 3DCoat and can be exported as a Normal or Displacement Map. Depth Amount let’s you specify the amount of depth being painted. Smoothing dictates how much smoothing is applied during the brush stroke. This panel can be accessed by clicking the LMB on the Depth Paint Toggle or the “D” key.

There are five Color Pickers to choose from. These are made available by left clicking on the color swatches in the top left of the main Paint Tool Panel. They are:
While the first four are common, let’s discuss the Image Color Picker a bit more in detail. It allows you to pick a color from an image, and is also handy for keeping a reference image open at all times during sculpting or painting operations. You can manipulate which portion of this image is visible, and its position in the window, with the three gizmo controls in this panel. Select the image of choice with the Select button or Paste the image from your Clipboard. Once used, an image becomes available via the drop down arrow to the right of the image name.
Create your own custom color palettes via the menu Windows>Popups>Color Swatches menu. RMB on any color to Delete, Insert or Edit any color using the Color Picker. New Color Swatches can be created and saved for later access and are stored in the main 3DCoat User Directory. Once stored, these Swatches will always be available in the list and accessible through the drop down menu.
