General

Common Workflows: This video series covers some typical workflows in 3DCoat, and how they involve the different workspaces/toolsets in the application.

3DCoat General Overview: This series is by no means a compendium of all things 3DCoat; the aim is to show you the most useful features as quickly as possible, which is what I would have wanted when learning 3DCoat.
Here we talk about some of the universal basics. The goal is to get you familiar with the basics and off to a running start. (By David Schoneveld)

Paint

PBR Smart Materials: This is just a quick video I made showing some of 3DCoat’s new and awesome PBR materials. You can create all new materials from scratch, but it comes with a bunch of pre-made ones, and they have many functions you can adjust to change the way it looks. (By Phil Nolan)

PBR Preview Options

Texture Painting: This demonstrates some of the more common Paint tools one might use on a similar project. It is not intended to be a tutorial on texturing painting techniques.

Image Picker: This video demonstrates the Image Picker in 3DCoat, which allows the user to sample color information from an image, as well as serve as a dockable reference image.

Using Reference Images: This video demonstrates the usage of reference images. Either as Image Planes in the viewport or usage of the Image Picker as a static reference image within the UI.

Paint Mesh to Sculpt Mesh: This video demonstrates the steps needed to send a copy of a Paint Mesh to the Sculpt Workspace (where it becomes a Sculpt Mesh that can be voxelized or have dynamic tessellation applied to it) and bake small-scale sculpting edits back to the Paint Mesh via a new normal map.

From Paint Room to Sculpt and back again: This video demonstrates a method one can use to get your model….fully displaced (with any work you may have already done using image-based sculpting)…from the Paint Room to the Voxel Room to make some sculpting edits there.
Then bake an updated displacement map that can be added to the Paint Room.

Alpha import: How to import a texture to be used as layer transparency information (Alpha channel) inside 3DCoat. It is impossible to import alpha information directly into 3D Coat but show a short workaround to do it anyway.
Additionally, explain how to paint flexible alpha information and how the “Linked layer” function helps here. By Christoph Werner.

Baking Ptex textures on to a mesh with existing UVs: how to bake textures after using the Ptex UV/Texturing method to a mesh with an existing UV map. Quite handy if you want to use the Ptex format in 3DCoat as a “storage” format with your high res details and bake to lower-resolution textures as needed. By Javis Jones.

Sculpt

Multi-Resolution in 3DCoat: Multi-Resolution allows you to work with the model at several levels of detailing while smoothly maintaining the details at high levels. Edit the model at any level of the detailing. All your edits are saved smoothly on all levels. You can also take the mesh from the Modeling room and use it as the lowest level. All the high levels will be transformed smoothly accordingly. The unique feature of the Multi-Resolution in 3DCoat is that the mesh structure of the low and the high levels can be completely different.

Sculpting Cartoon Character, Elmer Fudd: This is a simple and fun project timelapse of the modeling/sculpting process one might use to create a cartoon character such as this. It is not designed to be a showcase or an elaborate training video—just a glimpse of some of the tools one might use for a project of similar scope.

Creating Tiled Textures: This video demonstrates one method available to users of 3DCoat, to create their own seamless tiled textures.

Adding Thickness: This video covers adding thickness to a voxel object in 3DCoat, and why it is so important to use. Voxels are volumetric by nature and thus cannot work properly with single-sided and open meshes. Therefore some “thickness” is required to make it work.
It is ideal for applying that thickness in one’s host application before importing, but if that is not feasible, this is the way to add it just before voxelizing the object.
