Surface Tools

Subdivide

Stroke to increase the resolution by subdividing the mesh under your brush. You start by painting a selection mask and then applying it by hitting the Enter key or the Apply button. With other Tool Options, you can subdivide the non-frozen area or the entire mesh, if you choose. The Clear Selection button removes any selection masks made, entirely.

Draw

Constantly grows underneath your brush as you stroke. Also respects Brush Alphas.

Smooth

Smooths the surface under your brush. Can also be accessed by holding the SHIFT key with almost any tool.

Pinch

Cause the polygons under your brush to come closer together. The default state of this tool while stroking will create a cavity, while holding the CTRL key will create an extrusion. This tool supports Brush Alphas.

Shift

A smudging or smearing effect for surfaces. This will drag the surfaces under your brush momentarily. The “Strength” tool parameter determines the duration of the dragging of the surface.

Flatten

Flattens the surface under your brush. Respects Brush Alphas.

Chisel

Flattens the surface under your brush while also carving into it. This tool is related to the Flatten tool.

Clay

Similar to adding real clay to a sculpture, great for adding consistent depth or clay “strips” to your sculpture when Buildup is turned off. With the Buildup turned on this tool continually adds detail as you stroke.  Respects brush Alphas. Related to the Buildup tool.

Buildup

Grows underneath your brush as your stroke, and only while you stroke. Respects brush Alphas. Related to the Clay tool, with the exception of the Buildup function, since this tool uses it by default.

Fill

Fills cavities in the area you are stroking, under your brush. Great for filling in smaller details and not removing other details.

Lute

A more powerful version of the Fill tool, allows you to quickly fill cavities in while removing any former discernible details of the sculpture.

Expand

Creates a layer under your brush as you stroke, on your sculpture. It retains all underlying detail as much as possible. The edges of the extrusion or cavity it creates is smoothed. Extrusion or cavity is created depending on the Extrude Direction setting. Respects brush Alphas.

Extrude

Creates a layer under your brush as you stroke, on your sculpture. It retains all underlying detail as much as possible. The edges of the extrusion or cavity it creates is not smoothed and create some noticeable jagged polygons. Extrusion or cavity is created depending on the Extrude Direction setting.

Gum

Similar to the Expand tool. Respects brush Alphas. Extrusion or cavity is created depending on the Extrude Direction setting.

Absolute

Similar to the Expand tool. Respects brush Alphas. Extrusion or cavity is created depending on the Extrude Direction setting.

Freeze

Paint selection masks with your brush, using an array of tools. Alphas, Stencils, Stamps and Stroke Modes all work with this tool. When a Selection Mask is created the area will not be effected by any following tools. Similar to some other tools, after making a selection, using the hotkey combinations CTRL+D will deselect and CTRL+SHIFT+I will invert the selection.

Surface Hide

Hide the polygons from being seen or edited by stroking over an area. All polygons will be hidden that are under your brush. After hiding some polygons, using the hotkey combinations CTRL+D will unhide and CTRL+SHIFT+I will invert the hidden polygons with the visible polygons.

Rapid & Rapid2

This tool’s name is very descriptive, as it’s one of the fastest tools to sculpt general shapes. When you have more than one VoxTree object visible in the viewport, this tool will do it’s best to sculpt on the current layer but will create volume as if it were sculpting on both as one layer. This tool does not respect brush Alphas. The difference between Rapid and Rapid2 is that Rapid2 smooths the edges of the brush stroke, while Rapid does not.

Scratches & Scratches2

Simulates a real sculpting rake tool, creating scratches along the stroke. Great for creating muscle fibers and other similar looks. This tool does not respect brush Alphas. The difference between Scratches and Scratches2 is that Scratches2 smooths the edges of the brush stroke, while Scratches does not.

Mud & Mud2

Very similar to Rapid & Rapid2, however this tool also has a noise parameter you can adjust to get variously bumped stroked, similar to quickly applying clay to a real sculpture without smoothing it with water get get that “mud” look. When you have more than one VoxTree object visible in the viewport, this tool will do it’s best to sculpt on the current layer but will create volume as if it were sculpting on both as one layer. This tool does not respect brush Alphas. The difference between Mud and Mud2 is that Mud2 smooths the edges of the brush stroke, while Mud does not.

Angulator

By painting and using a Selection Mask you can then create sharp cavities or extrusions. The existing overall surface normals will determine whether the the sharpness is a cavity or extrusion. Hit the ENTER key or the Apply button to apply the tool.

Smoother

By painting and using a Selection Mask you can smooth a local area. With the Preserve Surface option off, the entire area will be smoothed causing the overall shape to be smoothed in that area around the Selection Mask. If Preserve  Surface is on, the area will retain it’s shape and the polygons in the area will be smoothed in relation to one another. Hit the ENTER key or the Apply button to apply the tool.
